The hitters also need patience and common sense. If a pitcher is wild and has walked 2 guys and you are up 2-0 in the count you need to take the first strike before swinging and in the case of Jung the other day swinging at ball 3 and eventually striking out. Jung is a rookie and he is learning but you learn those things in little league.
Those things should have been resolved in college. Jung seems anxious in the batters box.

There likely aren’t any available bats who can come in and make major improvements at this point.

However, that isn’t to say there isn’t a minor improvement we couldn’t make. Guys like Andrew McCutchen and Jeimer Candelario could be had without giving up a top prospect, and while they’re kind of average players, they would definitely look better in our lineup at DH/LF than Grossman, Garver, Huff, Smith, etc.

I’d take a 1 for 4 from those guys over an 0 for 4 from our current options. Have to look at it that way. Just like acquiring Stratton today. Give me his 4.23 ERA any day over unusable garbage like Yerry Rodriguez.

Once Seager returns, I’d like to see this:

Taveras CF
Semien 2B
Seager SS
Garcia RF
Lowe 1B
Jung 3B
Candelario or McCutchen DH
Garver C
Duran/Jankowski LF

That might be too much pressure on Leody, and he’s failed there in previous seasons. But he’s shown improved on-base skills this year and a lot of speed. You could also try Jankowski at lead off against righties if you want. Semien hasn’t been great lately leading off, so maybe shake things up by moving him down a slot.

Those are the only players who can remotely be counted on with any kind of confidence. I don’t want to see Grossman, Smith, Huff, or Miller much (if any) during the last 40 games.

Edit: with a lot of luck, that Garver slot can belong to Heim playing through the pain.

The Rangers have had six pitchers start games in June and July. They have also acquired 2 starting pitchers. Here are the ERAs of those eight pitchers for the months of June and July combined. The isolated July numbers are in parenthesis.

2.37 (3.10)
3.10 (1.96)
3.60 (3.48)
4.27 (5.06)
4.30 (4.35)
4.62 (5.48)
5.63 (5.40)
5.70 (8.50)

There seems to be a definite top 5 that should make up our rotation going forward.
2.37 (3.10) Jordan Montgomery
3.10 (1.96) Nathan Eovaldi
3.60 (3.48) Cody Bradford
4.27 (5.06) Dane Dunning
4.30 (4.35) Max Scherzer
4.62 (5.48) Jon Gray
5.63 (5.40) Andrew Heaney
5.70 (8.50) Martin Perez

Swap Gray and Bradford, and I think you’re spot-on. Bradford has been quite serviceable, but he has put up those numbers in a much smaller sample size. I’d still take my chances with Gray, recent skid and all, over Bradford as the 5th starter.

That's why I ignore some of the stats of those in the minors and compare them to the stats to those in the majors. Very seldom does it translate.

exactly right. a guy who hits well against AAA pitching isn't guaranteed to against MLB pitching.

If they can't find a bat it may be time to try one of the better hitters at AAA. The offensive drought calls for some desperate measures. It might not work, but neither is status quo.

Just don't bring a guy up and let him sit around though.

That is the way it will be. I am half way thinking Dunning doesn't make the cut. I know Bradford won't.

Unless Gray has a correctable problem, I personally think Bradford would be the better option, but there could be an ever bigger discrepancy in their numbers and Bradford would still not get the job.

It is a small sample size, but that is only because they allowed Bradford to languish in the pen for long periods. The double effect of that was him getting less opportunities, and it kept him from staying stretched out, resulting in shortened starting outings.

Neberg later recanted. It was obvious that even if Grossman fielded cleanly the runner would score.

Still Grossman is worked defensively than the other 3

From Rosenthal:

The White Sox are listening on Dylan Cease and everyone else on their roster. The perception among many in the industry is that Cease and center fielder Luis Robert Jr. remain all but untouchable. But some rival executives see the White Sox’s willingness to entertain offers as an opening, however small.

If we ever do go to another WS, I highly doubt we will have a guy of Grossman's caliber on the team.

We still need a healthy ace if we want to go to a WS.

The quantity of quality guys to acquire in trade is very low this year, especially on offense.

Too many buyers or holders and not enough sellers.

He looked pretty bad defensively too. Couldn’t catch the outfield assist and apply the tag and then bounced the throw to third on the stolen base.
