The slumping Choo is benched again. Precursor to next year or a conversation in the offseason???

Pick one. Pretty sure both will appear.

Management should approach Choo at the end of the season and let him know that there is a good chance that he will be a bench player from this point forward. If he isn't okay with that he can ask to be traded and we can grant him his wish.
No team is going to trade for him unless the Rangers are willing to at least half of the 2 years of his contract and that's $21M.

They thought Fister was worth that last year and his ERA this year was better than the two previous years so I think their thinking is he is worth that. That is, unless they just don't think he can stay healthy. His salary next year would only be $500,000 above what it was this year with the buyout taken into consideration.

They have messed up starters before by switching them to the bullpen so I hope they have learned their lesson and won't do that with Mendez.
Most analysts see him spending time in the pen as long/middle relief. Plus the most innings he has ever thrown in a year is 137

It might take a little more than half, but that is what we will have to do.

The Rangers aren't going to give up on him starting based on what some analysts think. That's why they gave guys like Tepesch and Nick Martinez several shots in the rotation before giving up on them.

They wouldn't have him in the rotation now if they were already giving up on him.

He will be in the rotation next April barring injury. If at the end of May he is pitching like Matt Moore then they might revisit that plan, but I don't imagine he will be anywhere near that bad.

If they were already giving up on him as a starter he would already be in the pen. That is what they did with Sadzeck.

By the way, when you checked his innings you forgot to add in his MLB innings. He has thrown close to 150 innings each of the last 2 years. Getting him up to around 175 to 180 next year wouldn't be any problem.

Not saying that they are going to give up on him as a starter just that they may use him as a long/middle reliever and possibly as a spot starter

They have him starting now to see if there has been enough improvement to warrant him being in 2019's rotation if they don't think he is ready then it makes sense to use him as reliever/spot starter

That is a sure fire way to ruin him as a pitcher. He needs to start until they decide he can't.

It takes a while to make that decision. 2019, like 2018 is for finding out things like that.

they will give him time in ST and make the decision before opening day. if they determine he's ready then of course he will be in the starting rotation but if not then it will be the bullpen & spot starts. you are in such a big rush to push these guys that you could be pushing them to be another David Clyde. slow down you move to fast

Haha. You are comparing a pitcher fresh out of high school with one who is out of options. They couldn't be much more opposites in terms of their preparation to start in the big leagues.

I think you know this actually. I am not sure why you are purposely being difficult. Maybe it is just the frustration of being a Rangers fan. lol

Maybe you just like the narrative of us signing a bunch of sub-par free agent pitchers and the obvious choice of Mendez being in the rotation puts a dent in that narrative.
