They did with Prince.

Sometimes you have to plan ahead.

The pessimistic take is to say they will do this all wrong and trade away players who could help in the future to keep Choo happy when we aren't going anywhere anyway. I am not that pessimistic. Not yet, anyway.
Prince had a known medical condition which put him on the bench. what excuse would you use to put $42M on the bench for 2 years?

I don't believe they should do that. no to trading away prospects to make anyone happy.

Here is my excuse for benching him.

.207/.325/.308/.633

Those are his splits since July 21.

Almost 10 weeks of hitting .207 with an OPS of .633 is a great excuse. He isn't getting any younger so those bad streaks are going to be longer and more pronounced as Father Time marches on.

The blew it by not trading Choo for whatever they could get for him and agreeing to pay however much they would have had to pay.

One way to help matters now is to make some room by trading Odor.

and it still came down to his neck condition which he finally admitted to and when the doctors examined him they told the team that he was unfit to continue thus the bench and then retirement.

and you still haven't explained what justification you would use to bench Choo and the $42M owed. he is still producing as a DH so come on how do you explain to the owners putting that $42M on the bench?

Good point.
Lay out the options to FO and let them make the decisions. Team's future can be made or delayed based on their decision. Hopefully they get rid of him for the future and now is the time before his value drops. IMO

Yes, I did. Those are Choo's numbers this year for the last two months.

You tell the owners playing the other guys makes more sense. That is part of the GM's job. If the owners can't understand things like that then they are in the wrong business.

It had to be understood when he was signed that Choo was signed for a longer period of time than he could be useful to us.

The same for Prince even if he wasn't have been damaged goods when we traded for him. No one should have expected anything much from either one of them in the last couple of years of their contracts.

So you tell the owners I need you to eat $42M so that I can play these guys who may or may not produce close to what Choo brings offensively. Do you honestly believe the owners would agree to that? Maybe in 2020 but no way do they agree to pay someone $42M over a 2 year period

So just eat that $42M.

Choi is one of the better hitters on our team. Defensively not that good. Love to move him but you can’t sit him. If you can’t move and are not going to play him then release him.

But let’s not kid ourself. That is not going to happen or should it. I had hoped we could move him bad contract for bad contract but that now looks bleak

Odor has had a good year. We could move him but not a good idea to just unload

To answer Tepid's question, absolutely nothing. Or, at least not as much as it is hyped to be.

If that is something that just cannot ever happen then they had better not pursue any top of the rotation type free agents. That means we would take a chance on being stuck with sorry starting pitchers in the rotation 5 or 6 years down the road

Texas Rangers 2019 payroll situation

Adam says, "Texas has more corner bats than they have room for, and likely will need to move one of the Joey Gallo/Nomar Mazara/Willie Calhoun/Ronald Guzman/Shin-Soo Choo group."

Then Adam asks, "Everyone is yelling “trade Choo” right now, of course, and if they could do so and eat just some, rather than all, his 2019 salary, that would clear up more payroll room...but again, to what end?"

I will tell you to what end Adam. To keep from trading anyone else in that group because all of those can help us 2-5 years down the line except Choo. It seems as if Adam simply doesn't want to trade Choo and refuses to accept that as a possibility for some reason.

It isn't about payroll at all. Now, whether they can trade Choo is a whole different topic, but Adam didn't approach it from that angle.
