Just for fun, here is a projected lineup with the possible moves we make using Bill James' recent projections:

Melky Cabrera-CF
Freddy Sanchez-2B
Buster Posey-C
Carlos Beltran-LF
Pablo Sandoval-3B
Brandon Belt-1B
Nate Schierholtz-RF
Brandon Crawford-SS

Aubrey Huff-Bench
Mike Fontenot-Bench
Andres Torres-Bench

Bill James expects Belt to be an everyday player and have pretty good numbers, also expects Nate to be a 4th OF. I think he was a bit shallow with Crawford, he showed flashes of being a better hitter.

That's the lineup I'm projecting too, except Huff starts at 1b and Belt spells Beltran and Huff off the bench.

same here - Belt will not be given the position - Huff will have to lose it - which is very possible - but will take a little time before he sees the bench

I know that Spring Training is overated as a predictor for future success/failure, but if Huff comes in out of shape again and stinks up the joint...

Of course, didn't Huff have a solid Spring last year?

He raked last March. I seriously doubt he'll come in out of shape. Three things going for the Huffer:

Last year his 91 OPS+, while not good, wasn't horrific.

He's in a contract year.

2012 is an even year.

I think he'll hit .800 OPS with 15 bombs and 60 RBI for about 2.5 WAR.

Even if we don't sign Beltran (and I would bet that we don't), it's hard to imagine us not hitting measurably better than last year, as long as we stay reasonably healthy:

2011 > 2010
CF: Cabrera > Torres
2B: Sanchez > committee
C: Posey > committee
LF: Belt > Ross
3B: Panda = Panda
1B: Huff > Huff
RF: Nate = Nate
SS: Crawford > committee

Two more potential upsides:
1) If we don't sign Beltran, that will leave room for a tactical mid-year signing
2) Brett Pill

Caveat: I said much the same thing on the Disney board last year about 2010 > 2009

I was about to say that we all predicted the same thing this last year going from 2010 to 2011, but we all know how that turned out. And you said it yourself anyway.

A little bitter there, Bravefan? Sorry that he sucked for you and that your team imploded this year, but nobody's buying what you're selling.

What kind of a swing does Melky have?

The Giants lose a lot on defense with Melky in CF over Torres because the Giants get a lot of fly balls, so he needs to bring his bat and stay patient at the plate.

He'll have about 40 BB, 70 K.

I don't know about a "lot" of defense. By the stats, he's slightly below average in CF, average in LF. He'll be a nice offensive addition, 10 bombs 65 RBI 20 SB 280/330/410...approx 2.5-3.0 WAR. Good value.

Those are all high. Bum will end up with 17 wins, an ERA below 3.00, 230 Ks and a WHIP around 1.05

I'm not sure the Giants will resign Beltran. Of course if they do then he would be our LF and Melky and Torres can battle it out in CF. I'm kind of hoping the Yankees pick him up and buy out Swisher and the Giants pick Swisher up.

Torres CF
Sanchez 2B
Scherholtz RF
Posey C
Sandoval 3B
Melky/Belt LF
Huff/Belt 1B
Crawford SS

or if we get Swisher

Melky CF
Sanchez 2B
Swisher LF
Posey C
Sandoval 3B
Schierholtz RF
Huff/Belt 1B
Crawford SS

I think Torres will have a bounce back year and play closer to his levels in 2010 then 2011. Giants need to sit him down and tell him he's a leadoff hitter and he should prepare for that role and not a power guy. If he doesn't get that he's a leadoff hitter not a HR hitter then Melky moves to CF and Belt in LF
