Barrows just tweeted a follow-up on this bit of news from yesterday. He said Miller had fluid drained from his shoulder yesterday and Miller said he would be back in a day or two.

Another follow-up. Eric Branch just tweeted that Miller had an MRI on the shoulder which revealed nerve damage but it's not considered serious.

Agreed! I liked those of him demonstrating technique to Kaepernick and laying on the ground, presumably to watch the feet of some of his players. It is a different look to once again have an offensive minded HC.

since there's so much defensive quality, i'd rotate them too. quality talent shouldn't waste on the bench.

I still don't understand why Fangio wouldn't take a look at some film. You have limited practice time, its going to be difficult for coaches to get a good look at everyone. Why not look at film!?! As he said in his own interview, defense is about read-and-react so it doesn't matter if they ran a different scheme last year. Players don't play the same in games as in practice or as in preseason games. It makes zero sense not to watch some film.

I love Fangio's respnse to who is set in stone as a starter. He wouldn't commit to Spencer, who I think is nothing more than a dime corner. Maybe someone on the 49ers coaching staff can evaluate talewnt afterall. The problem is, his job will be short lived, becuase there isn't that much to evaluate.

Report: 49ers close to signing Applewhite : Niner Insider

GORED: Running back Frank Gore has gone underground. Two of his former coaches I talked to said Gore has changed his phone number and has cut off communication with him. One coach said Gore isn't talking to many of his long-term friends and associates.

Apparently, this is not unusual for a player who holds out. Likely, Gore was told by his agent to shut off contact with most people because that way, people can't get a hold of Gore, like running backs coach Tom Rathman. Gore admires Rathman and it's possible Rathman could call him and convince him to come to camp while the team reconsiders re-doing his contract. Gore's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, probably doesn't want that to happen.

Akers spent time with the Carolina Panthers in 1997 while Seely was the special teams coordinator and has never forgotten about the early influence the coach had on his career.

Good thing about the new CBA your not going to see these extended holdouts. $30,000 a day and I forget the length of time a player can miss before they won't be able to accrue time, but you won't see players missing any regular season games like what Jackson and Makins did last year.

Hope the Niner's take care of him and give him a fair and reasonable extension.

Sunday's was the first practice in full pads, although there was no live tackling. That meant that offensive and defensive linemen went against each other in one-on-one pass-rush drills. The highlight was first-round draft pick Aldon Smith, who beat three different offensive linemen.

Smith got past fellow rookie Mike Person with a powerful inside swim move that should be familiar to anyone who watched him at Missouri. He also bull-rushed Alex Boone, knocking the big right tackle back several steps. (Boone got the better of Smith on the rematch). Smith also got around the outside of starting left tackle Joe Staley. In all, a promising full-pads debut for the rookie.

Smith, of course, played defensive end at Missouri and must get used to lining up in a two-point stance. He has been playing right outside linebacker with the second-team defense so far in camp. (He has been paired with Thaddeus Gibson) Smith did say, however, that the 49ers plan to use him as a defensive end in nickel situations.

Byham update: Tight end Nate Byham, who appeared to sustain a devastating knee injury Saturday, watched practice from the bleachers set up behind the west end zone. He was on crutches with a brace on his left knee. He underwent an MRI examination on Sunday. There was no official word on the extent of the injury, but he is not expected back any time soon. "Nate remains positive and is eager to rejoin his teammates at camp and begin rehab to get ready for next season if surgery is needed," said Byham's agent, Chase Callahan.

I like Baalke being on the field, evaluate your guys before going and getting a FA who may or may not be better then what you already have. Just because a player is unproven doesn't mean he isn't good or better then what's out there as a FA, the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
