NO doubt the defense played well. That Culliver drop pick 6 is still haunting me. The game totally changes if he makes that play. Preston Smith should be starting over Murphy. Breeland will be back so hopefully AMerson will stay off the field.

So we're not going to discuss the Dolphin WR running open all day? P. Riley still can't cover anyone. Defense against run was very solid. No consistent pass rush. Offense so vanilla it was ridiculous. Gruden sites that skins didn't make enough plays huh? Well, there were none to be made really. Still remain a very undisciplined team under Gruden. He may get 1 more year but clearly Gruden is not the answer. Hopefully SM can select his next HC.

For those are ready to jump come back in. Couple of these guys fire the coach and claim poor playing calling every game. I have asked which plays were called poorly but they never answer that question.

Most of the key points have been hit.
Too many penalties killed too many drives
Missed field goal hurts
Two dropped picks hurt. Culliver's might have gone to the house
You can't give up ST TDs
DJax getting hurt has a major impact but I think the game still could have been won without so many penalties

The good
Scherff and Moses -Suh who?
The D, they only gave up 10 points. Rushing D was stout again
The run game and Alf

The bad:
WR depth might not be what we thought. I thought Grant and Crowder struggled. Roberts dropped balls again

Kirk was okay, not great, not terrible. He didn't cost them the game, he didn't win the game.

There is some reason for optimism but I still think this is a 6 win team, maybe 7 with luck.

I'll co-sign everything said above. I'd add to the good that the Skins were the more physical team today. I'd add to the bad that playcalling not too lose is a damn good way to end up losing. Though I'm not ready to run Gruden outta town on a rail just yet. As I believe the man has been too handcuffed with Griffin (via Snyder) since last year.

I do believe if given his druthers. Gruden would've went with the best QB on the team the entire preseason from jump-street which was Cuz. Gruden can't protect him though, or try and over-protect him is probably a better way to say it.

Once again Gruden fails to make halftime adjustments and loses the 2nd half. This is nothing new and very very telling. So yeah that along with the play calling puts a lot of this on the coach. I've seen enough 4 yard turn ins to last a lifetime. This offense has a bad play on first down and 2nd and 14 seems insurmountable. Again opening it up does not mean throwing it long, not nearly enough 10-15 yard patterns. Trent Murphy was a useless stiff who again showed no pass rush ability what so ever. How did they not recover that fumbled kickoff when it was right in their hands?

The play calling was conservative. Not only was he protecting cousins, but also the right side of that line. But even with the conservative approach, we still moved the ball. Our problem on offense is we continue with the pattern of self inflicted wounds with critical dumb penalties and dropped passes. The penalties fall to the feet of the coaching staff. The team is undisciplined and loses focus. In this area, they were unprepared. I also blame the poor STs play on the coaches. Our STs have killed us all last year and now yesterday. A one time STs gaffe could be a player issue. A continued piss poor STs play as we have seen is a coaching issue.

It hasn't been just last year, it's been a problem for the entire decade. Danny Smith was run out of town because they couldn't stop kicks from being blocked. Since then we give up big returns on a regular basis and never get any of our own. They've switched coaches and players and it never changes.

You're right the penalties were killers but it goes back to my pointt. When you refuse to throw it downfield you can not overcome 1st and 20.

I can only fault this coaching staff for what happened last year, but you are right we have been terrible on ST for years. As for the conservative play calling on 1st and 20, you again are correct, but I would prefer to see them fix the issues as to why they find themselves in 1st and 20 (penalties). I don't care who you are, if you put yourself constantly in that position, you will come up short more times than not. We need to also remember that not only did we have an inexperienced QB with a propensity to force passes in these situations, but a young right side of the OL going against 2 pro bowlers. I have less issue with the play calling and more issues with the mental mistakes that continue to kill us

All true. Some of this is part of rebuilding. When you move to predominately young players you should expect penalties early on - it is part of the learning process. The key will be if they can reduce these as the season progresses. ST is another matter - you would think that they would learn by now in this area. As for going downfield more often - easier said than done when your best weapon is not on the field - hope Jackson is not out long.

So moving forward hopefully we see:

1. minimal loss of time for Jackson
2. defensive & ST players take advantage of potential turnover situations
3. Improved ST coverage
4. Reduction of penalties by the younger players

This may take a bit especially when playing teams like the Rams. People should not be too discouraged since many expected the Redskins to basically not show up & get beat by 3 or more TDs. That type of thing could still happen in many games - these will be good tests especially for Gruden.

Every year, it is the same thing. We give up STs TDs, don't get STs TDs, and penalties kill us.

I totally understand the reason to be conservative, particularly early. But I remember when they took over deep I thought to myself "it's pretty damn hard to go 89 yards 4 yards at a time" and sure enough after a great long drive one bad play and the drive was over. There is simply no room for error at 4 yards a clip and you are constantly being forced to convert 3rd and 3's on every drive, and that is assuming 1st and 2nd down worked out. You have to run like 13 perfect plays to get in the end zone this way.

This is related to a number of factors most of which can be corrected. Reducing penalties would obviously solve some of this (& even allow you to take a conservative approach). Having better STs would also probably mean that you are not always being asked to move the ball 90 yards all of the time. Finally - Jackson is a huge factor in all of this. You can state that the team can go downfield without him, but that is easier said then done.

A lot of this will be where Gruden and his staff will need to step up at the risk of not being around next season.

For the record I was fine trying the field goal instead of trying 4th and a very long 1.

Agreed, but this is what we get when we have an inexperienced QB and raw right side OL. Expect more of this next week. I don't fault the strategy, I fault the execution, especially as it pertains to the mental mistakes.

He forgot to say dropped pick 6 and missed FG. I hope people don't put this game on KC.

I'm not about to put this game on kirk. But only in the same way I wouldn't put several rg3 games on him. They played meh at best and didn't kill us there were things you could point out as positives with them but at this point I'm kind of sick of searching for the positives after every 10 point game.

He didn't lose the game, but he didn't win it, either.
