My thoughts exactly (except Memphis). If you can't win half of your games, do you really deserve a playoff spot? If they would just take the top 16 overall regardless of conference, we would've had all .500 or above teams in this year's playoffs (Grizz instead of Wizards). Wizards are a popular team because they've been hot and Russ/Beal are a flashy pair, but even after that hot run, they're still 4 games under .500.

That's more or less the point. Either open it wide open or stick to the historical model. Giving sub-.500 teams a 1-2 game shot at making up for a poor season seems unnecessary. Teams tanking when eliminated is less of a problem than teams tanking the entire season IMO (yes, even when the Lakers did it). If you're going to allow that strategy, along with resting players throughout the season and teams dumping games for playoff matchup purposes, then stop worrying about tanking altogether.
