So let's just say because of the personalities involved, the fact that the 49ers don't seem to be increasing their offer, or whatever, that Smith does not re sign with the 49ers, would you still have pursued Manning looking back on it as being worth that risk or not?

I would say it was worth the risk for a qb like Manning, you have to do what you can to get a hall of fame qb, but that's just me.

I would not have pursued Manning for the money he was attracting regardless of Smith.

Absolutely the Niners should have looked at Manning and signed him if they could. Doing so makes them SB favorites.

If they burn a bridge with Smith so be it. They drafted a QB for that reason. Anyways the Niners offered Smith a contract before going after Manning. Smith wanted to hold out for more money. He ain't getting it.

Andrew Brandt:

"Manning will make 18M in 2012 and, if passes physical in 2013, 20M in 2013 and 2014; 19M in 2015 and 2016. 96M."

Talk about mortgaging your future - I hope it works out for them.

Absolutely worth it to add a hall of fame SB winning QB. We would be ultimate favorites. As for the money, he def would of had to taken a pay hit to sign with us but thats because he would have the best chance here at winning the rings.

Not worth it at that price tag and we were 2 fumbled punt returns from probably being Super Bowl champions. We didn't have an urgent need to be going after a 20m a year player to help us win anything. Now then if we went 8-8 again last year and missed the playoffs it would be different.

Well, it is reported that Smith is signing the same contract that was on the table. Of course it was worth it. I'm glad we gave it a shot. It seems like Peyton was very close to becoming a 49er. Freaking Elway screwed us.

Well worth it. With Manning they are Super Bowl favorites. With Smith this year they will be also-rans.

I was all ready to say worth it until I saw those salary numbers......really, that's what you pay for a 30 year old Manning....not the 35 year old version with lots of questions. Crazy money. Maybe he would have taken less to play here.....I don't know.......probably still worth a look.

Alex smith isn't the best qb in the league but he is a winner and loyal to the 49ers...i hope he is here for a long time...49er faithful
