Now that the Phillies had their weaknesses exposed and summarily removed from any further post season participation by the Arizona snakes, they now have some work to do to add to their strengths and close their weaknesses. They especially need pitching help going into the off-season for next year. People are also leaving through and those spots will need to be filled.

Well, this is the off-season thread to leave the 2023 season and to focus on the 2024 season.

Here are a few suggestions for help for the Phillies for 2024 from the FA market.

Pitching. The Japanese sensation Yamamoto is making his way to the majors. Maybe the Phils should get into this market. Josh Hader is also available as a reliever.

Fielding: Two FAs that would really add to the Phillies line-up: Cody Bellinger at CF and 1B. Stroman maybe a good fit and Justin Turner just opted-out of his Red Sox contract.

Just a few suggestions fir the FO TI get their asses moving.

If you go just by the numbers they could upgrade at third base with Matt Chapman, but it seems like Bohm is a fan favorite now.

Starting to sound like Nola is going to be moving on. He’s projected to sign something for 7 years and 30 million a year. I’m out on that. I would bring him back for 3-4 years at that money but 7 years means likely 2-3 years of a rotten contract.

I’m gonna revisit what I said all last season.

Go get Corbin Burnes. Similar age but he has half the major league innings on his arm than Nola does. Then give Burnes 5 years $150 million.

He would be a good complement to Wheeler but I think he's got another year on his contract.

Fuck it, give Milwaukee Bohm, Taijuan Walker and a prospect, then sign Chapman.

It’s gonna cost you Abel and McGarry. They’re gonna want two swings at a guy who can replace Burnes. I’m willing to pay that cost. Painter is the crown jewel and now that we’re here…he’s gotten his Tommy John out of the way. In my eyes, you don’t think twice about trading prospects now. Bryce Turner and Schwarber don’t have many prime time years left. You have to strike now.

Yeah I see your point. Some of these contracts, like Turner in particular aren't going to age well so it would help the long term legacy if they won the Series at some point. And the best chance is probably in the next year or 2.

Listen, I don’t want to be that guy and a negative Nelly but my biggest fear is that this year was the year and they blew it losing 4 of 5 to the Diamondbacks. If Kimbrel just doesn’t blow one of those two games it’s Phil’s in 5 and they ride a ton of momentum into the World Series vs the Rangers who just came out of a grueling LCS vs a rival who has pretty much been their Big Brother. That’s a great spot for the Phils. This was the year. Dombrowski has to do work for me to be convinced it could happen again.

Dombrowski and the FO have informed Rhys Hoskins that the Phils will be playing Bryce Harper at 1B full time in 2024 and that they are basically moving on from Hoskins!

And Dombrowski has let it be known that Castellanos is now available for a trade.

Don't know if this is a good trade but it has occurred. Got a couple of youngsters in the Brewers Farm system for an older Oliver Dunn.

I guess it's good getting younger but Dunn looks like he can hit. If a couple guys get injured in season he could have been a useful guy to come in for a couple months, like Darick Hall did a couple years ago.

I agree Cedrique. I was leaning toward thinking trading Dunn for two youngsters was just plain stupid. Now I am convinced that trade was really stupid for a lot of reasons!

Why waste a 40 man spot on a 26 year older minor leaguer? They got younger and got two for the price of one. To me this is a great move. This is how you build a great farm system. Make the Brewers, a small market franchise, be the team that has to take a chance that a 26 year old minor leaguer beats the odds.

Yeah you're probably right. I love his minor league stats though. Hopefully he gets a chance with the Brewers.

It’s really just one year though with those stats. You can make the argument that a dude who has been in the minors for that long should be raking against AA pitching. I think at the end of the day he wasn’t making the 40 man roster and instead of getting rule 5 cash they instead get to take a swing on maybe one of two young prospects working out. At the end of the day, the most likely outcome is that we never hear from these three players again.

The power numbers just showed up recently but I'm looking at his OBP and for his entire minor league career he has 874 ABs and 165 BBs. That's something that's hard to teach. Still a good move for the Phillies but I'm bookmarking this page so I can come back to it when he hits 40 bombs for the Brew Crew as a 2nd baseman.
