After the first front office job he did with the Pistons head coaching search where they ended up with mediocre retread Maurice Cheeks it was obvious.

He was a great coach, but he walked into situations where he had the most talent in the league. Sure, he was able to get them to work together, which is no easy task and previous coaches had failed at, but it is a completely different game assessing, drafting, and trading to build a team than it is to get the most talented guys to work together. Just like not all previously great players make good coaches or GMs, not all previously great coaches will make good GMs.

This is the only subject in my spectacular career I got wrong. Phil sucks as a GM
