This has come up for debate, and it's certainly a curious question. Only once before has a "death penalty" been levied in NCAA history...the infamous SMU Mustangs pay for play controversy. Well, I think we all can agree that this instance is much worse than a few fast cars and dollar bills being handed out, but is it the NCAA's place to step in? Should they do something short of the death penalty, stay out of it?

Kentucky basketball a long time ago

Morehouse College mens soccer

MacMurray College mens tennis

And if this incident at PSU doesn't represent "lack of institutional control" which is one of the things the NCAA can punish for without prior violations, I don't know what is.

Tank is a good take on it...they can't expect PSU to self-discipline. That's been the issue the whole time. Hit them where it hurts...football.

Went with death because I asked "should"; "would" however, is likely a slap on the wrist or nothing.

I've always hated Penn State...I've always disliked Paterno...because hate is a strong word, and I don't think I've actually "hated" another human being... but Joe was guilty...he's not here to defend himself anymore...but his legacy has been changed forever...and so has Penn State's ...I don't believe there is any chance that Penn State recieves the death penalty..although I can't argue that they don't deserve it. I think there will be prison time for others involved...Paterno got kind of lucky..he died....there are worse thing in life than dying...things like watching your life's work and personal ethics crash around you in a web of lies. Paterno didn't live to see this... he got lucky.

That's why I'm intrigued by others opinions. I've never liked PSU or Joe Pa...probably because I was always disturbed by the saintly status PSU fans put him at. Men are fallible and fallen creatures....we all screw up, so you're best not putting human beings on such high pedestals.

I heard that the statue of Paterno on campus has been rotated 180 degrees so now he looks the other way...

/Sorry, may be an old joke but i just heard it today...

And by the way Fuck Penn State and Paterno. Gregg Doyel said it best, Paterno had almost 4000 days pass since he was first made aware of the allegations. 4000 nights he was able to lay his head on a pillow and fall asleep. How did he do it?

They had a security guard standing next to the statue all day...because of the twitter threats to "tear it down Baghdad style"!

Remember when Paterno and Bowden wee jousting for the most win record and everyone saw Paterno as the clean and moral guy doing things the "RIGHT" way. A few pairs of free shoes doesn't look real bad anymore, huh.

Did you see Bowden's comments on it? He said that his legacy is forever tarnished. That the first thing people will think about when they think of Joe Pa is this, not his success. I think he's right. At least for a very long time.

I don't know that we'll ever have old standbys again. The way coaches are hired and fired nowadays is not conducive to having a Joe Pa around anymore.

I dunno, I'm not even really angry about this sort of thing. I'm just numb, I guess. That's probably bad, right?

Penn State should withdraw from football this season, and their players should be free to transfer to other NCAA schools without penalty. If it were up to me I'd shut down the football program for at least 5 years. Yeah you're not making any money on it, but so what? There needs to be some time for these wounds to heal before Penn State plays football again. IMO

Angry about the coaches being hired/fired a lot? Or...the whole situation. One is bad, one is not. Hah.
