Thinking the trade market will pick up this weekend in MLB. I believe the non-waiver deadline is the end of the month. Peavy to the Giants.

That's a great deal for the Giants - stacked rotation now - battle between the Giants and Dodgers will be great

...and it won't be great for the Pirates who will most likely be fighting for one of the wild card spots.

There might be a really good team or two that ends up out of the playoffs - I used to watch baseball all the time, but this year I've watched very little - I'm watching a few more games lately since it's summer and there's nothing else

NL East will come down to the Nats/Braves, NL Central looks like Cardinals/Reds/Brewers/Pirates in the mix and the NL West looks like the Giants/Dodgers, so right now there's a chance that two or three really good teams might not even make it

The Reds may be playing their way out of contention at the moment, but yeah, two of Cards/Pirates/Brewers and one of Nats/Braves will be fighting for *one* spot most likely. Unless one of the Giants/Dodgers take a dive.

Dodgers need to keep pace now, trade for Colon!

I'm pretty annoyed with the Dodgers. I just hate them. I hate everything about what they stand for. I hate them...HATE. Now they're rumored in on Lester. Just go away you bastards.

I don't know if Peavy will be all that great for the Giants. He's been giving up a lot of home runs, doesn't keep the ball on the ground, and is a fly ball pitcher with only a just above average K-rate.

Of course, pitching in AT&T might help him out quite a bit. It's a lot more stingy with the long ball.

Man, he would be their third starter. Ryu would be four and Beckett five. That rotation would be unreal.

Yeah, I wasn't really excited when I saw the Pirates being named in that race. I just want them to get an arm...if they go in on a guy like Lester, I think that can push them over the edge.

Paging higgy and ww:

Brad Ausmus just blew his top after a challenge on a pick off attempt - the umpire in question who made the call (and the crew chief) was Jim Joyce. Mr. Ausmus got his money's worth in that argument.

You know what I'm *really* glad about? That teams like the Mariners were awarded a competitive balance draft pick. The poor guys simply can't keep up with the massive spending that occurs in the league. Same with those poor down trodden Cardinals. Can't catch a break...should certainly make sure we award them so they can hang with the rest of the league.

Yes, I am a very bitter fan of a small market team that doesn't have a big payroll.

Yeah, they were talking about it being weird the Cards are in this thing on the radio the other day.

The way baseball is structured is not fair or competitive. Thankfully, it's the major sport where spending more money can only buy you so much advantage

Nats beat Cincy again to help you guys out today. ;)

Our starting rotation is just filthy. When Stephen Strasburg has the worst ERA of the starters, you're doing okay.

Thank you for that. The Reds are in a complete tail-spin it would appear. And the whole idea of competitive balance is a joke when they set it up like that. The league doesn't give a rats ass about teams that don't spend, that much is obvious. They refuse to have spending restrictions...except in the draft, which is what small market teams did to stay competitive. The balance draft is merely a PR move to make it seem like they care about small markets. The system is incredibly flawed though. I know they can't base it merely on spending, because then it could be easily rigged...but giving a team that just gave out a $240M/10 year contract to one player an extra pick is a joke. Or giving a team that was just in the WS and is a perennial contender and spends over $100M per year an extra pick is a joke. They do have a small market...but in their market they are king and their owners spend without care...rewarding that seems pretty messed up. Meanwhile, the number #27 and #28 ranked payrolls in the league didn't get a pick. Heck, they even rewarded the *MARLINS*. If there's any ownership group that doesn't deserve an extra break, it's Loria. He spent a fortune in FA, proceeded to get rid of all those players, fleeced a town into building him a monstrosity of a ballpark, and has a team in a HUGE market. Again: doesn't deserve a break.

Amazing...they spend $102M more than the Pirates on their payroll.

My favorite is the Dodgers spending just over 3xs as much money as the Pirates. That was fun to think of as they won the season series 5-2 last week.
