The one post in the comments says Caine said it in an interview with Empire Magazine, that this was the first scene of the movie they filmed and Ledger hadn’t gone out in full makeup on set to that point.

Whether Michael fucking Caine was actually spooked, I guess only he would know. I suppose Nolan could’ve re-watched this first take with those dumb ass extra reactions and been so taken by Caine’s reaction that he decided to leave this in the final cut, definitely sounds like a Nolan thing to do.

I also heard Caine’s line was “why didn’t you suspend Tom Wilson?”.
