Re amazon:

The wages they pay at fullfillment centres actually are high when you compare them to similar low skilled warehouse positions in other industries. In our market, they advertise $18.50 per hour. That hurts alot of “smaller” businesses who cant compete with that wage. That being said, amazon chews up and spits out these people. And they usually quit when they decide they would like to go to the bathroom

From the perspective of the high skilled “tech” worker, they get paid high wages based on the competitive market for their skills. The one thing Ill point out is that you can have a software engineer from Asia (on a work visa) sitting next to a guy born in north america in a downtown Seattle office doing the same job and being paid less :noidea:

I think they just raised the fulfillment center wages in the US after everybody was giving them shit for it. It's low-skill work and people aren't going to get paid anything resembling a living wage there but when the company is pushing $1 trillion valuations and Bezos has more money than many countries it's not a good corporate look.

I saw somewhere that it was $50k in tax breaks for every Amazon job in NYC, with an average earning per employee of $150k.

That may seem like the government is donating 1/3 of salaries until you consider the downstream benefits – construction work, services companies who will supply & maintain the offices, other companies that spring up as a result of Amazon’s locating there, increased property tax & income tax (NYC is a three-hit jurisdiction for income taxes) from new arrivals & increased property values, etc. Throw all of that in, the city & state are getting a pretty good ROI there.

Now, does any of that help the people Ortiz is talking about? Not really, although we can argue about many of the things she nitpicks at for days - NYC’s subway and transit system, even with its faults, are still miles better than anything else you’ll find on this side of the world (and maybe anywhere else period) and attracting a high volume of high-end employment to the city does have a trickle-down effect that can be considered “investing in the community” (although I’m sure what she actually means by that is completely reversing the NYC real estate market which, well, good luck with that). But for a city like NY, it is a deal that should pan out pretty well for it.
