They did go out and get Bobby Ryan. Melnyk may be a nut. And he is, but to say that Alfie left just because Melnyk's cheap is a massive leap. Again, how is he cheaper than Wang who trades second round picks just so he doesn't have to ACTUALLY spend to the cap floor.

Now, if after getting $33 M a year for regional TV rights from TSN Melnyk doesn't increase player spending I'll agree with you.

I'm just not sure what FA you think could have been signed to make them a contender this year. If you say Alfredsson I'm going to laugh my night away. This team is a shitload from being a Daniel Alfredsson away from contending with the Chicagos, Pittsburghs and Anaheims of this world.

They chose Bobby Ryan over Alfie, they had made that decision prior and knew they weren't bringing Alfie back so that's why they made the Bobby Ryan deal

I'm not saying Alfie makes them a big contender but they'd be much better - they're fighting for their playoff lives right now - they'd be in the playoffs right now if they had him - his presence is huge

They should be going out and trying to get a guy like Thomas Vanek - also, they should have been making some shrewd trades, like moving Craig Anderson when his value was still high - they could have improved their team in that way

Some of these moves/non-moves are puzzling and it seems like they've lacked a plan, to an extent

Oh, and that's now a 9 game point streak for Giordano. Sure glad Hamhuis is going in his place to Sochi.

Ughh. You think with Alfie and Vanek and without Anderson they are a contender?

1) They need another top flight defenseman, not Thomas Vanek or Daniel Alfredsson.

2) How would trading Anderson do anything? Lehner is the future but I, for one, think that him and Nathan Lawson is a sketchy goalie tandem at best.

3) They did NOT choose Ryan over Alfresson. Ryan was plan B after Alfie bolted. They've openly said as much. They needed a top 6 winger and went out and got one of the better ones in the league.

4) Three years ago they said they would do a three year rebuild. This is the 3rd year. Just because they made the playoffs in the first 2 years doesn't mean they go crazy and sign the David Clarksons of the world to "compete". From where I'm standing that's having a plan and sticking to it.

I got to watch Brooks Orpik attempt to play defense against Keith Yandle tonight. Great fun.

Oh and one more thing. The Sens are 10-4-3 in their last 17 games. They shit the bed tonight but I'm OK with that kind of record.

So Ballard checks Wideman into Berra and then pushes Berra into the net and then scores? What the hell?

Ballard!! :suds:

All tied up: It's a new game, folks. :)

Just another example of game management by NHL officials. Not a good night for the zebras at all tonight. I mean, is anybody surprised that the league is on pace for a record number of shootouts this season?

Geesh... another comeback comes up short. :(

Good game, Calgary.

Great push in the 3rd period by Minny to get a point. All of a sudden, things are getting tight for those last two playoff spots in the West.

Flames currently are the hottest team in the NHL with a five game winning streak.

What's going on with the California teams and their inability to score goals

Ducks get shutout tonight for the first time this season
Kings have 3 goals in their last 6 games
Sharks have 2 goals their last 4 games
