He spent money all those years and now all of a sudden he can't spend to keep Daniel Alfredsson in the fold? The Sens have been a winning team and he can't spend money? He's absolutely cheap that is the problem - the issue with the Isles and Preds is that the Isles have a shitty arena that they're lucky to get out of soon and the Preds don't have the cash flow - the Sens have the cash flow and now all of a sudden he can't spend any money, especially when the team had success the last few seasons? That has cheap written all over it - the Sens have more resources than a bunch of other teams and he simply doesn't spend

What resources do the Sens have other than Melnyk's cash? His books say that he loses about 10 mil per season. I'm not sure I'm buying that per se, but it's not like he's raking in the cash like the Habs or Leafs.

He's cheap no doubt but he's far from the cheapest.

The Sens have one of the best prospect pools in the league and Melnyk could go out and spend money to get a big time guy in order to put them over the top but he doesn't do it - you're telling me he couldn't afford to pay Alfie for one more year? That's just bullshit, and I didn't blame Alfie at all for leaving - that should have been a no brainer for the Sens to re-sign him - if he couldn't re-sign Alfie then he really is cheap

They did go out and get Bobby Ryan. Melnyk may be a nut. And he is, but to say that Alfie left just because Melnyk's cheap is a massive leap. Again, how is he cheaper than Wang who trades second round picks just so he doesn't have to ACTUALLY spend to the cap floor.

Now, if after getting $33 M a year for regional TV rights from TSN Melnyk doesn't increase player spending I'll agree with you.

I'm just not sure what FA you think could have been signed to make them a contender this year. If you say Alfredsson I'm going to laugh my night away. This team is a shitload from being a Daniel Alfredsson away from contending with the Chicagos, Pittsburghs and Anaheims of this world.

In this modern NHL, it takes a lot more than going out and getting a big name FA. It takes drafting and developing well. I don't think Melnyk's cheap at all...that thought never crossed my mind. Slightly crazy? Yes. Cheap? Nah.

FYI: the refs were pretty awful in the Pens/Yotes game tonight. Really awful.

Hello, i'm a NY Mets fan, talk about cheap owners..

Hahah, I feel like with the Mets...it seems worse because they have to share a city with the Yankees droppin' Benjamin's on every FA willing to give 'em a lap dance. Is that too weird of an analogy? Anyway. Don't get me started on my feelings about the Pirates offseason spending.

He's gotten a little tight with his cash recently. His other interests have taken a big hit to say the least.

The Sens are actually very good at drafting and developing but their current core, outside of Spezza, is still growing up.

I hope that when the Ryans, Karlssons, Cowens, Lehners, etc. come of age that the Sens THEN start spending cash to put them over the top.

Sorry in advance Pix, but a rigged lottery ball doesn't hurt either.

*sigh* I know you're being funny and all...because really Pittsburgh pre-Crosby would be a weird market for Bettman to fall in love with (you know, I had forgotten the other 3-ball lottery teams: NYR, CBJ, BUF). Moving on: yeah, I always laugh when people say "follow the Pittsburgh model"...so yes, wait around for a once in a generation talent to fall into your lap. It works, I swear! They DID do a good job of insulating him however (See: Oilers, Edmonton)

We need to tank next season for Connor McDavid.
