I'm not buying the Panarin sign and trade hype either.

Jarmo is a pretty unconventional guy, but even then sign and trades feel like they barely ever happen. Why wouldn't he just go ahead and trade the rights if he's trying to gain assets in a shit situation.

There's been some people saying he would do a sign and trade on Duchene. We would literally LOSE a first rounder if he did that. Let him walk: Keep the pick. Sign: Lose pick. Sign and trade: lose the pick.

What team wants to pay an old, washed up (by the end of the contract) goalie $10 mil for an additional year?

New York Rangers. I mean, they've done it once before.

Florida would be another option.

And why him but not Bobrovsky then?
Or literally every other UFA out there.

If the BJs want/feel like they have no choice but to trade Panarin, he's going for a 4th before UFA opens just so someone has exclusive negotiating rights. CBJ isn't going to hand him 8/56 and then hope someone gives up a 1st+ for a guy that they could have in UFA for maybe an extra half mil AAV.

Was there a conditional pick that only kicks in if he re-signs on that deal?

I think some major changes for Columbus next year. Going to be a whole new team IMO. I doubt Duchene, Bob and Panarin are back there next year.

Yeah, the deal was for this year's first and next years if he signs with us. So if he signs with us and THEN we trade him we lose a pick for nothing.

Jackets don't want to pay what Bob wants, and he will never take as much of a discount as the Jackets want him to - He gone
Panarin wants to be in NY, LA or Florida somewhere. No amount of money is going to sway him on that. If there was an amount, I believe the Jackets would consider it. But realistically - He gone.
Matt Duchene literally chartered a plane to take a bunch of his teammates down to Nashville for one's birthday and has been gushing about how much he enjoys being here, his teammates and the organization. The only question is where the number falls on the scale between 8 and 10.

All the best to Nash in the front office. He had a pretty good career and is probably the best Columbus blue jacket ever.

Did not see any team with a horrendous cap problem tbh. More surprising was the number of teams with work to do to get to the (anticipated) floor.

How did the Oilers cap situation look? I mean, last I checked, they were pretty close to the cap and they have some bad contracts that will be tough to move.

Spent some time on capfriendly.com yesterday and was a little surprised to see Vegas with the most committed salary for next season.

I think the feeling around Vegas is Marchessault and Karlsson could both get dealt in addition to Miller. Could probably find a taker for Reaves too but I'm guessing they want to hold onto him.

That Pacioretty contract somehow looks worse today than it did when they signed it.

There's nothing really awful about it. If they wanted to clear some space there's definitely easy moves to make - finding a buyer for any two of RNH/Klefbom/Larsson without taking back significant money will leave them with around $20 mil in cap space. Those pieces could just as easily be used in a hockey trade to address weaknesses.

I can't stop staring at that Koskinen cap hit though. That is up there with Cliff Fletcher trading Alex Steen days before Brian Burke took over with the most puzzling last-gasp roster moves ever. Manning and Benning combining for $4.5 mil is pretty ugly too.

How John Davidson's departure to the Rangers will affect...

Looks Rick Nash might move to the FO in Columbus.

Yeah, when he returned to Columbus, his focus was on coming back to play one more playoff run. When it turned out that wasn't in the cards, the Jackets essentially told him he could hang out and decide what job he wanted. He spent time with Chris Clark (Conditioning coach) and some time with the scouts but has pretty much been shadowing Zito and Jarmo since like March. With everyone moving up a rung, he's got a job if he wants it where Zito was sitting.

For you and all those others who were wondering:

Vegas is interesting. They still have the Clarkson contract for one more year! I suspect they want to resign Engelland, but doubt they could pay more than the min. He might be OK with that.

They have 12 forwards signed now, not including Karlsson. My guess is they make a lot of noise about resigning him, but are probably hoping someone gives him an offer sheet and they happily take the draft picks as comp. With so many teams under the cap, I can see this happening. If one were suspicious, you might want to believe that the League might quietly push this, to prove, you know, that there is no collusion and RFAs can get offers.

I dont see any other RFA or UFA forwards they care about keeping. So I dont see Vegas needing to make any moves other than letting Karlsson go. Sure, they have bad contracts they might want to dump, but doesnt every team?
