Gardiner is a good player but how much ice time is he actually going to get in Carolina?

One of:
Slavin
Pesce
Hamilton
Faulk
Gardiner

is going to be a bottom pairing D this year. Add in Van Riemsdyk and you've got a pretty damn expensive pairing playing about 10 ES minutes a night.

Gotta believe the Canes either have a trade worked out or they are sure they can move one of these D for a good F once the season starts.

I counter this with the reminder that Carolina's goalies are Reimer and Mrazek. They need all the defense they can get.

I dunno - say they don't want to trade Slavin (they don't) and they don't plan to play a $4 mil/yr puck mover who can log 20 a game on the third pair (they don't), that leaves Pesce.

My two questions are

1) Is Pesce all that different from Jake?

2) If not, and Jake went for about the same amount Pesce makes and didn't cost any assets to acquire, why would anybody give anything good up for Pesce?

Like, I'll shake the hand of anybody getting Jake Gardiner for 4 years at $4 mil/yr gladly (assuming he's healthy and his back isn't an issue) but I gotta do some squinting to find the logic in this.

Report that they also gave Jake a Modified NTC. 10 team no list.

Well, Pesce is 5 years younger than Jake. If $4M a year is a fair price for Pesce, the cost certainty for the 5 years left on the contract might have some value.

This is a head scratcher. Carolina is not where I expected Jake to sign.

On a related note, there was a whole lotta hot air last year and this summer about Jake being a $6-7M AAV guy. Guess not.

I think Mrazek's alright for now. See if he can be as competent as he seemed for stretches last year.

They have Nadeljkovic in the pipeline who got a start in last year stopping 2 of 26 and getting the W against Vancouver. Maybe get him up at some point and see if he can shore it up.

The cost certainty comes at a cost of roster pieces/picks/prospects though. Jake was free and just as cheap.

I expected him to go to Montreal so I'm pretty happy I don't have to hate him now.

I think his back injury wrecked his market but at this price there's really not much to lose. He deserves more but it is what it is.

I see the Sharks hired Ned Colletti as a scout. At least their prospects should be able to hit a curveball.

/I wonder how many other baseball GM's have gone on to be hockey scouts, probably not too many

My uncle was a scout for both the Mets and Islanders. But he preferred boxing:noidea:

I just don't know how confident I would be relying on Mraz solely. Reimer isn't anything anymore. And he wasn't much before.

He's almost making Seth Jones money!

There's a goalie named Outhouse and this is the first I'm hearing of this? We are living in an age of miracles.

Negotiating ploy? Would suck to lose him for nothing. At the same time I don't know where he fits on the Devils. Nico, Hughes, Zajac top 3 with McLeod and Boqvist battling for the last center spot. Not sure he has a leg to stand on if he's looking for a big payday.
