Well, with the caveat (see how useful that word is) that there is an exception to every rule, I just cant see how trading away a Top 5 pick +++ is worth any one playeryou could sign RFA. If you are bottom 5, any one player is not going to move you up that much. Even FLA only moved up to 20th this year. If they signed one RFA last summer, they get to....where? 15th? Just doesnt seem worth it to me if you have to give up multiple high picks.

I said Top 5 because it seems that once you get outside of that range, (a) you are not guaranteed a star player at all, and (b) if you draft Tyler Biggs, you have even less than that. In other words, a Top 5 is a first rounder just like a #26 is, but they are not even close to even value. So if I am in the Top 5, better to keep that stud then trade it away plus more to get one guy who by himself cant make you a contender.

I call this the ShanaPlan (TM).
I would trade away a #3-5 pick this year for Vladimir Tarasenko.

I would sign Barrett Jackman to the same money and term that Deryk Engelland got a year ago (3 years, 2.9 million per season).

/I'm sure he's looking for much more, though.

Jackman was never the same after Bertuzzi destroyed him for 7 games in the first round of 2003.
of course, Bertuzzi was never the same after the Wild made him eat his words in the following round

Jackman's 34 but would be a decent add to any team looking for defense. Edmonton perhaps?

Apparently the Penguins are calling often on Kerby Rychel.

I don't think that Kerby Rychel is a guy you want to trade to a rival that has the centers that Pittsburgh does. That will bite you in the ass.

Plus, Pittsburgh would be completely stupid to let go of the two D men I'd want most, Reverend Lovejoy and Maata.

Rychel could make sense in Pittsburgh. They have an abundance of young defenseman that could go the other way in return.
