Yeah but he went to school there, was QB there. It's his dream. He is living the dream my friend and is well compensated. What reason would he have to go to higher stress? He has a nice ranch. Property taxes in Oklahoma are dirt cheap and he is well known throughout the state. Got it made.

Well, maybe he's complacent, doesnt mean the alumni and school is.

For sure. I was just speculating on why he didn't Take the Tennessee job.

Don't blame him. It's still a dumpster fire. Not sure who will ever douse those flames

Yeah. Not blaming him so much as he does have it made there. He just wasn't likely to ever get higher on the coaching rung letting grass grow under his feet at a place like Stoolwater.

He'll go down in history as another Gary Pinkel.

So long as Gundy stays at OSU they will play it straight and do their best to build a winning program the right way. But if President Burns Hargis leaves (he's the ultimate straight arrow) and Gundy leaves, then all bets are off. Those of us who were raised in Oklahoma know first hand how the Aggie fans HATE playing second fiddle to OU. Once you cut that first corner, cutting the next ones come easier.

You can't be a champ by just outscoring people. You must play some defense.

You can make offensive linemen. (Well, Florida State can't but everybody else can)
You can't make defensive linemen. They must have some skill.

The guy does okay for what he gets/has. He develops offensive players. They lack on defense.
He has improved them by leaps and bounds but he can't get over the top.

Who do they get if he is booted? Do they gamble on somebody else? Looking from afar, with history
at my back, OU players are in their heads...big time. They have no confidence when they face OU.
Even in years where it appears that they are equal, they just can't get it done. One bit of adversity and they
crumble when facing the Sooners.

Okie St is in a tough spot. Settle on fighting for third in the league or gamble on a new guy?

you're right, just look at all those national champs that got outscored on a regular basis

I think he's burned out.
All the signs are there, so of course the Administration gives him a raise and a contract they cant get out of.

It's what Aggies do.
Now wait a minute Auburn is an Agricultural school and we don't...awe fuck it you have a point.

LOL you know what he meant, even if he did type a logical fallacy :D (yes you cant win if you dont outscore your opponent, and you cant lose if you do outscore your opponent)

For sure. I was just speculating on why he didn't Take the Tennessee job.

Tennessee has never been a real player. It's just an easy one he can go to when he wants a raise. Arkansas in 2012 though. That one was real. Apparently he damn near accepted but his wife talked him out of it.

At least that's what the insiders say.

The reality for us now is it all boils down to QB play. 2010-2011, we had a QB that was a 1st round draft pick and we were 10+ wins. 2012 was a qb carousel and we win 8. 2013 we were competent, won 10 and had a bedlam game that pretty much broke me as a fan. Good QB play late though. 2014 we had a good QB but he was knocked out for the season in game 2 and the backup sucked. Good QB comes in late as a true freshman ans we win Bedlam. 2015-2017 we had really good QB play and won 10 games each season. Shit luck for us that OU had arguably the best QB play ever at that position during this time as otherwise we get one and maybe 2 Bedlam wins there. 2018 we had bipoler QB play (against strong competition Corndog was on fire, against crap competition he was dogshit-I really don't get it). 2019, we have a RS Freshman who was all world in high school but is apparently colorblind because he can't tell the difference in jerseys he is throwing to. So average qb play and average season.

The good news for us is Lunt said Sanders is starting to figure it out so we may get to good QB play soon. If he doesn't we have another all world type QB coming in next season so between the two we will have good qb play either next year or the year after and that will last for a couple of years. Plus we are real good at recruiting 4* skill position talent so there's plenty of people to throw and hand off to for the foreseeable future. So we'll be fine.

I think the internet fans are freaking out right now but honestly our internet fans kind of suck. The millenials got into college football in the late 2000's but they don't really know our history. I was a freshman in '98 and we didn't go to a bowl game during my time in college. A freshman a decade later doesnt know what it's like to not go bowling. I think for alot of them, they saw 2011 and 2013 as kids, expected more out of the Rudolph era and are wondering wtf right now. The reality is after him we had some recruiting misses after him and never got a solid successor. We had a 4* that didn't pan out, Starkel decommitted late in the next class (how's that working out at Arky?), Wallace's brother got his knee destroyed in practice which was really bad luck for him and us, and Woods ended up being a tight end. So after Rudolph left we had a true freshman who also has a history of knee injuries, a 5th year walkon who was a walkon for a reason, and a transfer who we took for depth. We went with the walkon and the way the season played out couldn't get the other two in for meaningful snaps. Now we have a RS Freshman who could have used meaningful snaps last year and the same transfer who everyone kinda wants to see at this point. Personally I'd like to see what the guy can do but if he's about to turn a corner I'm cool letting it play out. This is probably going to be a 7-5 season where we fuck up OU's (or most likely come close, again) season, win a meaningless bowl and everyone had a kumbaya moment heading into the offseason.

The lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball is really frustrating. We don't have anyone rated above 3* on that side of the ball. Literally the last 4* recruit we got there is finishing his career at Nebraska. We've got a few decent pieces but as a unit they really aren't that good and looking at our current class that isn't going to change soon. Part of the reason we hired Dukes DC was he was doing good things with lesser talent. So far that's not working but even if it was ok, but I don't see that as a long term solution. When we hired Knowles the fan base saw what Grinch was doing at Washington State and we could have gotten him. OU did that and man that's a great hire-it isn't talked about but with the insiders it is a thorn.

So tldr, we're fine. People need to manage expectations but aside from a handful of loud dumbasses the fan base isn't in revolt. We do have concerns though and despite the fact that historically we are better than before losing games we should win isn't helping.

I don't know what you do.
If I were OSU, I'd just plan to go get the best guy, let him win, goes and gets better job, rinse and repeat.

Gundy isn't winning many Conference games, and he looks to be going downhill. We'll see what the rest of the season looks like. But I think you guys better suck it up and do something about it at season's end, if it doesn't get any better.

Like I said, good qb play cures all and most likely we will see that in a season or two.

The caveat here is Holder was a Boone guy and the rumor is after he passed he would retire. So it's really likely we will get a new AD in the coming months. Also Boone had this thing called a will so buyout cash may not be a problem. And Gundy is here because he loves the school. The buyout is bad (something like 20 million) but he has more money than he needs, doesn't want to cripple us and gives no fucks so I could see him riding off into the sunset cheap. Or he could pull a Barry Alvarez and become his own boss. I'm not sure I like that option (see Barry Alvarez) but it's not like he wants to burn the house down after he steps down.

My guess-his youngest is a senior in HS with a couple of small school offers. Either he walks on and he stays another 5 years before retiring or lasts another year and goes to watch his kid start for Toledo. Either way I'm fine. Like I said I think we see some better teams in a year or two so I'm happy and the last decade has been better than anything I experienced as a student so I'm not losing my shit over a couple of low level bowl gsmes.

My bigger concern is who replaces him. Generally the person replacing a legend is bad. Pat Jones was crap in the end but 30 years ago he was the best we had. My college career was 3 years of Bob Simmons and Les Miles showing up when I was a senior. Basketball was Eddie which was fun, but then we got Travis Ford and went from final four caliber to losing seasons quick. Maybe we get lucky, but for every Chip Kelley there are a dozen Ron Zook's. And say we get lucky and rattle off a couple of 10 win seasons. It's really going to be hard for us to pay someone NFL money if they dont have a real reason to stay. With Gundy, 2005-2011 his wins improved every season and for a program that didn't do much prior to that he probably turned down a ton of offers because he wanted the school he cared about to get better. No way we can do that back to back.

It's like you said. "Boykin" or whatever that guys name was.

The Sports Talk radio shows have OSU alum on them, so I get to hear about how bad Gundy is fucking up. They don't talk much about TCU.

I meant to say aside from Boykin. Patterson had a really great OC who developed him though. Aside from one season how has he done in the Big 12 though?

Your sports talk guy is Sam Mayes. He went to school there but there's a reason he's on the radio in OKC.

That is true.

Pat Jones has the other three 10 win seasons. 1984, 1987, 1988. Barry Sanders was 87/88.
