its a sad time to be a skins fan in the final death throws of its name

many fans of a team have many different reasons why they became fans . some root root root for the home team not matter what it is . others like the colors or the history . some is nostalgia .

i started loving the team because of a red headed qb named sonny jurgensen . when i had hair it was red and as a young boy who was teased about his hair he was a guy i looked up too and be proud of my red hair

me being a book reader and history nerd i started reading about the skins history . i learned of the great sammy baugh , and andy farkas . cliff battles and bones taylor . eddy lebaron and gene brito dextor , charles doug the hogs , smurfs , billy kilmer , jerry smith gibbs george allen lombardi larry brown green monk clark sanders and on and on

i remember a passage when center Ki aldrich went to the LOS and announced " gentlemen , Mr Baugh is going to pass again . i dont know where but it will be good ".

then of course there is the redskins marching band . the only pro team with such a band and the greatest fight song ever HTTR

those are the memories i carry and the passion i have for my team . i dont live in the DMV anymore and when i have visited my hometown of fredericksburg its heartbreaking to see what it has become .

where i played , gone , where we found the whale fossil , gone the high school i went to , gone

what will become of all those greats ? sammy baugh can be named because of the team name even though none of us ever saw him play live . i wonder what happens to sean taylor and his legacy ?

does gary clark , joe jacoby or brian mitchell even have a shot at the HOF ? will they even be able to go in as redskins if anyone cared to fight for them ?

the cancel culture doesnt seem to want to relent if you call the team warriors and link it to the history of the team will the name redskins be bleeped out on TV ?

all that i have mentioned above comes from the team named REDSKINS , not some upcoming rebrand

i have loved this team my whole life and given it my heart and soul , never quitting on it , never ever missing a game i was able to see , following by newspaper , sociall media computer sports media magazines everything and now i am supposed to accept a rebrand ? a whole new beginning ?

back in the day when i followed the washington bullets and went to games with my friend wally we got the same passion for the bullets , then one day the PC crowd thought bullets contributed to violence in DC so they went with ate the hell up wizards . the wizards are not nor will they ever be the bullets just as the bullets arent the zephyrs anymore

and you cant ever sell me that somehow it is because it isnt . not to me or people like me

once the bridge is broken you cant go back

now we can go warriors or braves and i could accept that . but HTTR is gone , most likely the band too .

yes we can get a new fight song and maybe a band but it isnt the same .

how do you get fired up over losing the cowboys and redskins games ? renegades , generals presidents senators freaking red tails vs cowboys just doesnt conjure up historical dislike

this board needs a smack talk thread based solely on that skins cowboy rivalry . handicappers coming over here saying " red tails sucks " means nothing because it DOES SUCK

now i am sure most of the younger , root for the home team crowd dont care . they will root for the team . STY is like that , and by god there is absolutely nothing wrong with that . people have many reasons for their fandom

i will be sad when the team loses its name . i lost my dad this year and when things were tough and we couldnt find things to talk about we always could talk about the skins .

my dad would toss the football with me in the backyard with a make shift end zone and he would be sonny , throwing me a perfect spiral at the back corner of the "endzone "

my freind wally would have his dave butz jersey on and i would have either 9 or 44 on and we would play football virtually every day snow or not except sundays . tackle no pads or we play in the street dodging cars . mike gore would come over with his number 17 and play qb . . glen mitchell , rickey haley mike melton trent johnson chris schoonover and his sister , the Bouthard boys , greg sullivan . we all played and worshipped the skins

now i am supposed to trust in dan snyder with a new expansion type team and somehow build up the passion to say go red tails go ?

i am not sure where i will go if the name change turns into a total rebrand . one thing for sure is my passion will be gone and the cancel culture is the main cause

I echo your thought dad. Family moved to DC, I was a died in the wool Iggles fan. All the sudden, that red headed buy, Charley Taylor and Bobby Mitchell and I became a Redskin fan. It won't be the same … we could argue it hasn't been the same for a long time but we always had that history. Changing the Bullets name did not stop violence, #blm only matters when you can get TV or radio time. The killing and violence goes on and know one cares. I suspect there will not be any additional help for the native American's either.

My Dad's about to turn 89 - and he's an ex Army officer - slowing but still doing well. The Skins have also been the constant that we've always enjoyed talking about. Honestly, he was not happy about the Skins changing their name. But we talked about it yesterday, and he's accepted it's not going to affect his fandom. If Snyder hasn't done that, then a name change isn't gonna do it. But to each is own - everyone's a fan for their own reasons. I wish I was a Nationals fan, but my Dad took me to an Orioles game when I was a little kid, and I'm stuck still being an O's fan.

I propose that we've all been subjected to a clean version of historical "fact" and a lot of legend "based" upon that retelling of legends.

Accuracy aside, our personal experiences cannot be denied nor held against us as we form a basis upon which we make the hard decision to continue support of this franchise or walk away.

There's a lot to a name that's meant so much to so many who loved it historically, and the many who wanted it gone for historical reasons. Let us be clear, no "mob," "cancel culture" influence, nor accusations of "political correctness," are behind whatever decision you're going to make!

The truth is a lot more simple than that, isn't it? The truth is people don't like change, especially when that change is so intimately intertwined with our life experiences. Again, you have ever right to feel as you do, but don't act surprised or use excuses (mob rule, cancel culture, or political correctness) for feeling that way, when I informed you years ago, on this particular forum that this change was inevitable. You didn't like it then and you don't like it now, that is a fact!!

Just to be absolutely clear, the term "mob" is used to incite, "cancel culture" the new kid on the block, is a misnomer, intended to mean eliminate, instead of its truth...change!
Finally, let me ask, if one is "politically correct," what's its opposite, "politically incorrect?" If you honestly had to choose, which would you want to be? These may or may not be the agents of change, but how you feel about something that happens routinely across the globe, belongs to you!

Here on this forum we're able to make our points, but looking around at what our young people are doing with respects to change, we are witnessing their desire to not live in a world that had become comfortable to most of us here.
