Gene Principe (Sportsnet reporter and Oilers broadcast team member) is saying that the Oil and Jackets have negotiated a swap of first round picks. No further details available at this time, but the speculation is that the Oil will take Ryan Murray with the 2nd overall pick.

I guess we've entered phase two of the Lowebelini regime's rebuilding plan: Trading away number one overall picks - the team must be set now, only a few minor tweaks to go...

Tom Renney said yesterday that he was sad to leave halfway through the Oilers rebuilding phase. Let's see Tom, you were head coach for two years, I think there's a lot more than two years left with the rebuilding of the Oil.

Curious to see what they get from CBJ. If they draft Murray and sign a veteran defenseman they are heading in the right direction.

What Lowe did was pathetic. The Oilers & everyone else has had all season to watch him play. The combine is coming up. They can interview all the top prospects then. I understand wanting to make sure your team is selecting the right player, but to use the World Championships to do so is a joke.

Wait, what?

I have heard nothing of the sort here. And, uh, they have the first pick. If they want Murray they can have him. The Jackets don't have to give up anything, that would be retarded.

hrm.

Point taken.

Sounds like either Gene was given a bum steer or was trying to break a story prematurely, 43.

"Hey, we'll give you some sort of asset to guarantee you the chance to get the guy we can't prevent you from getting. Deal?"

Sounds like something Lowe might do, maybe that's why it had legs.
Lowe maybe just seeing if he could squeeze a little out for CBJ to be able to make a splash.
And so Lowe won't get strung up when he passes on Nail at #1 to take the 3rd best d-man in the draft

I can see why Lowe would. But there is absolutely ZERO upside for Howson to do it. He has to see that.

Oil keeps the pick and grabs Yakupov. Jackets choose between Grigorenko or a D man. They need a center, and it gives them a reason to keep Nash. Or they add to a D corps that is growing in talent quickly.

If Oil keeps the pick and grabs Murray, they get the best player in the draft.

The ONLY way to lose is to trade to guarantee they get Yakupov. When there's a way better than 50% chance they get him anyway without losing an asset.

Now if they could swap picks AND move Mason out of town for any serviceable goalie... maybe. But that's unlikely because serviceable goalies is not something Edmonton has had in 10 years.

I think it depends on who Columbus wants. Lowe has made a big deal about Murray. Smokescreen or not there are teams that would like to acquire Yakupov. I actually believe if Lowe wants Murray he could probably trade down to 5. The Leafs could get Yakupov or Galchenyuk. Edmonton would probably get their Defenseman because Garth is probably going to take a forward at 4. He's gone forward early the past couple of years with good defenseman on the board. I don't see him changing his philosophy.

I expect Columbus to take Forsberg.

whoa. so now this is out there....

@sunterryjones

Taking pass on Grigorenko. But somebody should ask about the alleged $200,000 Patrick Roy paid him to play junior in Quebec City this year.

I'm not shocked one bit by this tweet, to be honest.
