Mets could commit 3 years to Stephen Drew, Boras seeking opt-out clause

The Mets are willing to offer three years to free-agent SS Stephen Drew, Sandy Alderson told a group of season-ticket holders Thursday at Citi Field, but so far that has not been necessary.
However, Drew’s agent, Scott Boras, is seeking an opt-out clause after the first year of the deal, which the Mets view as a deal breaker (Rubin, Feb. 6).

So basically this says, ''if they suck, i'm not playing out the contract'' fuck that then.

Boras is a piece of work. Basically he wants to get Drew the security of a three year deal in addition to being able to showcase his services to other teams for the first year. Win-win for Drew.

Yuppp, not a fan of it though. Don't like him being able to just opt-out if things go sour or he wants to earn more money elsewhere. He really is just showcasing himself.

Friday...Feb. 7th
Matt Harvey intends to pick up a baseball on Feb. 22 for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in October.
"They said I should be able to start throwing four months after the surgery, and that's Feb. 22," Harvey told the New York Post. "And I haven't had any setbacks. I can't wait. Even if it's 10 feet, I just want to pick up a ball. As if right now, I don't see why I wouldn't be able to do that."
Harvey is expected to arrive in Port St. Lucie, Fla., with other pitchers by the Feb. 15 report date.
He still wants to pitch this season -- even though it is highly unlikely, given a typical 12-month recovery time from Tommy John surgery and no logical reason to rush.
"I completely agree that I shouldn't come back too soon," Harvey said to the newspaper. "I haven't touched a baseball yet, so I don't know how things are going to go once that happens. But if things are still progressing and it shows I'm ready to go and I get cleared, I want to be able to play

How might the Mets bulk up their bullpen? By having a rookie make the Opening Day roster as a member of the relief corps, according to one team official.

Walters

Leathersich
The insider specifically mentioned prospects Jack Leathersich and Jeff Walters being candidates for relief work from the get-go, while not ruling out a minor-league starter such as Rafael Montero or Cory Mazzoni.

Leathersich, the lone left-hander among that group, is a fifth-round pick in 2011 out of UMass-Lowell. He has 241 strikeouts in 143 career minor-league innings and posted a 1.53 ERA last season with Double-A Binghamton. But Leathersich struggled after a late-season promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas, posting a 7.76 ERA while walking 29 in 29 innings with the 51s.

The Mets are particularly light on left-handed relievers, with Scott Rice and Josh Edgin the lone two right now with major league experience.

Walters, a seventh-round pick in 2010 from the University of Georgia, set a Double-A Binghamton single-season and career record with 38 saves in 2013 with the B-Mets, although he struggled in the Eastern League playoffs.

Montero would be an intriguing option because of his prospect status and the fact that he has nearly exclusively started games during his minor-league career. He certainly has the command for the role -- having walked only 67 in 348 1/3 career minor-league innings.

Terry Collins previously has mentioned Mazzoni, another minor-league starter, potentially getting a bullpen look this spring training.

Of those four, all will be in camp, but only Walters is on the 40-man roster.

Mets scouts watched free agent RHP Joel Hanrahan throw a light bullpen session in Texas on Friday (Carig, Feb. 7).

The session was intended to gauge Hanrahan’s progress in his recovery from surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon muscle, and Hanrahan’s agents intend to showcase him for multiple clubs in early March. He is expected to be fully recovered by May.

The latest on Stephen Drew: Are the Mets interested or not?

The Mets and free-agent SS Stephen Drew have had continuous discussion about a contract, according to a source (Carig, Feb. 9).
However, a second source with knowledge of the team’s thinking says that is not accurate (Carig, Feb. 10), which was later echoed by a team official (Davidoff, Feb. 10).
It was reported this weekend that Drew is seeking an opt-out clause after the first year of his deal, which the Mets view as a deal breaker (Rubin, Feb. 6). Drew has reportedly been seeking at least a three-year contract.

So confusing.

It's a paradox, inside a conundrum, wrapped around an enigma, then placed next to a clusterfuck.

Who the hell does Drew think he is anyway ?? You'd think he was the 2nd coming of Cal Ripken Jr or Ozzie Smith, FFS!!

Granted he's a decent SS , but..... he. ain't. all. that.

^^^ This.

If we give in to this buy-out bullshit, or anything more than two years, I will be very disappointed in Sandy.

They just need to stop the silly cat & mouse nonsense...either sign him for something that isn't too ridiculous and exorbitant and get him in camp..........or don't, say fuck it, and move on.....and focus elsewhere.

I want to move on. I don't want Stephen Drew. He's injury prone, he's milking a very solid season as though he's been doing it for the last 5+ years. With the crop of SS available next year I say let him walk.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.( Feb.11) -- After considering a shakeup, the Mets' in-game radio team will remain intact with the switch to WOR.

An industry source told ESPNNewYork.com that Clear Channel Media and Entertainment has decided to keep Howie Rose and Josh Lewin as the broadcast team.

Rose is an institution on Mets radio broadcasts, while Lewin has become popular since joining Rose two seasons ago.

An official announcement is expected later this week.

The pregame/postgame host may not be announced at the same time. There has been a prolonged negotiation with one candidate who currently works in satellite radio.

WOR had weighed replacing Lewin with a former player, to complement Rose as an analyst, as SNY does on the TV side with Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling joining Gary Cohen.

WOR is replacing WFAN as the Mets flagship station

Mets sign Jose Valverde

The Mets have signed free-agent RHP Jose Valverde to a minor league contract with an invite to major league Spring Training.
Valverde, 35, has recorded 296 saves during his 11-year career.
He is best known for his time with the Tigers where he posted a 3.00 ERA and struck 7.9 batters per nine innings, while recording 110 saves from 2010 to 2012. However, last season he struggled, was demoted and eventually designated for assignment with a 5.59 ERA after just 20 relief appearances with Detroit.
Sandy Alderson said Tuesday on WFAN that he had been looking to acquire an experience relief pitcher to compete with Kyle Farnsworth, among others, for a spot in the team’s bullpen.
The Mets reportedly showed interest in Valverde last off season, as well.

This -n- That...

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.

FIRST PITCH: A Mets official was coy about what precisely will be done. But the insider definitely left the impression the team will do something special to honor Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner, who contributed to Mets telecasts all the way until his death at age 91 last week.

The Mets created a uniform patch to remember Gary Carter after his battle with cancer tragically ended in 2012.

Among fans on Twitter, there seems to be some sentiment in Kiner’s case to name a nook by the foul pole at Citi Field “Kiner’s Korner,” after his longtime TV segment interviewing players

• After driving from Boston with his interpreter, Daisuke Matsuzaka reported to Mets camp on the same day Masahiro Tanaka had his big press conference at Yankee Stadium. Dice-K, who re-signed on a minor-league deal, is looking to claim the fifth-starter’s role. He definitely can identify with what Tanaka is now experiencing, having been in the same situation in 2007. “The way he finished last year, I am glad he is back in camp, because he gives us huge security,” Terry Collins told Kevin Kernan in the Post about Dice-K. “This guy can pitch.” Read more in the Times and Daily News.

From the bloggers … Faith and Fear tries to decide upon which near-miss Mets team it would retroactively bestow a world championship. … John Delcos at Mets Report believes the Mets should “quit the charade and just say no to Stephen Drew.

• Anthony DiComo at MLB.com previews the bullpen. Bobby Parnell, Vic Black and Kyle Farnsworth (who is on a minor-league deal) would appear three names to pencil in, while Jeurys Familia and Gonzalez Germen would appear solid candidates. And Carlos Torres did fine as a long man/spot starter in 2013. From the left side, Scott Rice was durable last season before succumbing to surgery for sports hernias. His sidekick among southpaws may come down to a competition between Josh Edgin and Leathersich.

• Actor Ty Burrell and host Jon Stewart, both Mets fans, tried to one-up each other with barbs about the team during Monday’s “The Daily Show.
