My problem with Irving is how many games a season is Irving a dominant every down player? Was it 5-6 games last year? How many the year before, 3?

Irving missed 8 games last year, and how many the year before? He might be cheap for one more season, and that's not even guaranteed at this point. He's far too inconsistent, and too much of a wild card to give a huge deal to, IMO.

#36 is a fine consolation prize and potentially has a lot more future value to the Cowboys than David Irving at open market prices. I'd rather play it safe on this one. I would approach this topic differently if the Cowboys didn't have McClay running the draft.

Having M.Collins able to slide back over to his more natural 3T also lessens the blow of losing Irving.
He missed 8 games last year and that was an issue, but he was very consistent when he played. The year before he was inconsistent which was what concerned me after that year. After last year the only thing keeping him out of the Pro Bowl talk is staying on the field - same issue as Lawrence. If he plays this year under the current tender I expect a big pay day for him this time next year.

Why not trade up for derwin james? If it only costs a second rounder then it would be worth it. We get a stud safety for the first time since woodson.

reading some rumblings that the Colts may be interested in David Irving. They would have to surrender their 2nd round pick (#36!) to acquire Irving.

I say yes, please!

#19 Vea/Payne/Hernandez
#36 Roquan Smith, Rashaan Evans
#50 DJ Moore

....I would be a happy Cowboy fan. Don't think Moore slips that far, but one can dream.

Ro Smith at 36?? Is he falling or something. Undersized - possibly. I don't care- BALLER

If Fleming sign's and they move Collins back to LG does this hint the Cowboys use the 1st rounder on Wr,Safety or DE? I looked at tape of Calvin Ridley and initially did not believe the hype. So the other night went and watched some games. I see a can't miss stud. Great route runner. Great after the catch. Great hands and gets open with separation often. The other thing about him is the effort. This guy is the real deal
I agree but if Rashaad Evans is there with him at 19 I see the Cowboys drafting Evans over Ridley

That being said if we could get Smith at 36 I'd be 100% all for it. I don't think Smith will be there at #19, let alone #36, but who knows.

For arguments sake, let's say that the Colts acquire Irving...

You (and others) are most likely right about Smith not being available at #36. I think there's a fair enough chance he will be available at #19, though. What if the Cowboys did something like this...

Sign Cameron Flemming to play RT and move L.Collins back to LG
#19 Roquan Smith
#36 DJ Moore
#50 BPA with a lean towards DT, S

If they sign an OL, let's see what kind of dollars they give them before we assume they are the week 1 starter. I still think we look OL at some point in the first 3 rounds. My preference is both sign a guy and draft a guy.

On Ridley, I'm still torn. When Alabama only throws the ball 20 times per game, he should look a little better when they do decide to throw it. Offsetting this is not great QB play. But, In the 3 biggest games of the year he went 3-38; 4-39 and 4-32. I'm not saying he won't be good, I'm just saying I don't feel confident about him being worth a mid first round pick

Agreed, Irving will get paid if he has another great season. That's kinda why I want to get that draft pick now. I'll trade 1 cheap season of Irving for the #36 all day. Because when it comes time to pay Irving, I think I'd rather throw big dollars at someone else.

I just feel losing Irving hurts us too much unless we add another piece. If he was getting huge dollars I take the pick, but he is playing for about what our backup TE makes and I think he takes another leap forward this year. Plus, the old Parcels quote: "if you only have one pass rusher, you have none" and I don't know that this team is going to commit to Lawrence next year. Where would that leave us? Cap room to spend yeah, but a huge need at rushing the passer. I'm in the camp of pass rusher being the most important position in Football other than QB and I have a man crush for any DL that can play both the pass and the run well. You can say LT is more important, but that just means it's to protect against the pass rush and nowadays these pass rushers move all over the line so the blind side isn't the only attack spot.

But, yeah that draft you mention would have value for this team for sure.

I hear ya man. If the choice at #19 is Vea, Payne, and/or Smith hard to say what I would want in that moment. I think all three could be great additions.

That is certainly the rub. If he puts up 12 plus sacks and we pay him big dollars and the he gets suspended again, where does that leave us? But, that's the same with D Law. these damn suspensions are tough to plan around and like playing with fire:flame:

Not saying he is as effective as Irving at the 3T, but I think M.Collins at the 3T is above average and is an asset. M.Collins at the 1T is easily replaceable. Possibly draft a guy like Vea or Payne to pair with Collins and that has the makings for a pretty stout interior.

As an aside, I think taco is going to provide some pass rush this year. I liked what I saw the last few games of 2017.

I am a really big fan of Collins. I think he is much better than last years play. But one of the things I like about Irving is the ability to play multiple positions on the DL really well and naturally, not just the 3 tech so I think we could get both. For example if we drafted Vea, I see us going Irving, Collins, Lawrence and Vea as starters. I think Crawford will be gone if we sign a big dollar FA, but if not, he and Taco (if he plays like the last couple games) will be big factors in the rotation. Crawford like Irving can play multiple spots which adds to his value. Then I think you have Price playing a lot of minutes this year at the 1 also. I think this could be a really good and really young every down DL and I think the improved run play will help our LBs a little.

I think the front office has their eye on improving the run defense in general. Improvement along the Dline is/should be a major focus of the team this year in the draft. I expect to see a run stopper drafted in the first two rounds. The Dline has to be able to control the run game better, because every time Lee goes out the run defense goes to hell.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see DL & LB in the first two with that in mind.

Don't be surprised if the noise about the Colts wanting to sign Irving turns out to be true. They just traded back with the Jets and picked up a few extra picks. They also have something like $75m in cap space.

according to CBS Sports both Ridley and Evans both are going to drop into the 2nd round so if Indy signs Irving and we get their 2nd we could go Payne in the 1st and Ridley and Evans in the 2nd
