One of my all-time favorite gifs.... But Pablo was in fantastic shape going into last year, hand injuries are what caused the missed time. Those are damn good numbers for missing that much time with a HAND injury non-the-less.

Not that it really matters, but that gif was created by a dodger fan.

From John Shea:

The Giants, who anticipate a payroll in the neighborhood of $140 million, have 10 players under contract for 2013 for about $100 million, including starters Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Barry Zito, Ryan Vogelsong and Madison Bumgarner, relievers Affeldt and Javier Lopez, third baseman Pablo Sandoval, Pagan and Scutaro.

Arbitration-eligible Hunter Pence would push that figure beyond $110 million. Add arbitration players Buster Posey, Sergio Romo, Santiago Casilla, Gregor Blanco, Joaquin Arias and Jose Mijares, and it's clear why the payroll cannot stay where it was in 2012, in the low 130s - even with Aubrey Huff, Freddy Sanchez, Brian Wilson and Aaron Rowand off the books.

That seems to leave no room for any more costly free agents.

So here's my update, FWIW, with Pagan and Scutaro in the bag:

Major assumptions:

Like baseball-reference.com, bonuses are not amortized over life of contract

FA's:
OF $2.0 for 2013 (Nady / Hairston)
Theriot $1.5
Wilson – non-tendered (much as this breaks my heart)

--------------------------------------------------------------

SF Giants Payroll 2013

Starters (5)
Timmy $22.0 fixed
Cain $20.0 fixed
Zito $20.0 fixed
Vogey $5.0 fixed
Bum $.75 fixed

# Starters Subtotal $67.75

Bullpen (7)
Lopez $4.25 fixed
Affeldt $6.0 fixed
Romo $3.6 Arb-2
Casilla $5.4 Arb-3
3 others $4.0 (Mijares/Kontos/Runzler/Hembree/other)

# Bullpen Subtotal $23.25

C/IF (8)

Buster $5.9 Arb-1 or first year of extension
HSan $0.5 Pre-Arb
Belt $0.5 Pre-Arb
Scutaro $6.0 fixed (3/20)
Craw $0.5 Pre-Arb
Panda $5.7 Fixed
Arias $1.0 Arb-1
Theriot $1.5 FA

# C/IF Subtotal $21.6

OF (5)

Pagan $7.0 (4/40)
Pence $13.8 (Arb-4)
Blanco $0.5 Pre-Arb
Other $2.0 FA
Other $0.5 Pre-Arb (Peguero/Brown/someone)

# OF Subtotal $23.8

Huff buyout: $2.0

Estimated Total $138.4 (25 players)

It would be awesome if somebody (far more talented than myself) could turn that gif into a Ryu "allyouken" (from StreetFighter II). :heh:

That perfect game was so intense and so awesome (especially considering the score was 10-0, lol). What an amazing year last year for our boys.

BTW, Keppinger to the White Sox for 3 years $12M.

What is that? The last video game I played was pong.

Deprived of street fighter? (one of the best games ever!)

The allyouken was a powerful jumping uppercut initiated when you press a series of buttons to..ah nevermind lol. It was a mind numbingly fun video game :)

Baggs is reporting that Scutaro had a firm 16M two year offer from the Cardinals. So that final year cost 4M, more or less. That's not much to eat.

Not at all, especially if that year spent as a platoon player, veteran presence off the bench in 2015 as many expect him to be as he nears the end of his career

Could never get into video games like that. I do have a Wii, and xbox kinect, but that is mostly for guests, and the occasional house sitter.

I'm hoping that the veteran player who was such a big part of the 2012 drive will be able to teach the youngsters all about situational hitting and patience at the plate. It's been a long time since the Giants have had a player who not just understands, but embodies that. The performance that Scutaro put up after being acquired by the Giants could be the video next to the definition of "situational hitting" in an online dictionary. Runner at 1st, no outs, one run game 8th inning? Bunt runner to 2nd. Runner at 2nd or third, with first open? ground ball hit to the right side. Runner on third, < 2 outs? Fly ball to the OF. He was money in leverage situations for the Giants. I am praying that he can pass that knowledge and approach on to his younger teammates.

Agreed, especially with his two fellow countrymen and Pence. Those three are good hitters, but they could use a situational approach in some instances.

Any idea what the updated payroll is? Can the Giants even afford Wilson and Hairston at this point?

I know $140M has been mentioned twice, but I read in the SJMerc recently that either Sabean or Baer (don't remember which) confirmed that the salary budget would be "around" $140M for 2013.

While watching the Panda's at bats, I often wish that he would learn some damn patience at the plate. Then, at some later point I remember that he hits a lot of his HRs on pitches that are shoelace-high, or 18 inches off the plate and let it go. ;)

I don't mind (or rather have learned to appreciate, lol) Panda's patience or lack thereof in probably (an obvious pull it out of my ass estimation) 90% of his at bats.....just when there are those situations that call for it.....that drives me nuts......and it's not so much a patience issue, but a situational/pitch awareness issue. The guy hits the way he hits and smoked a high-outside fastball by Latos over the RF wall at Phonebooth. I'm ok with that type of stuff (in the above pioomae) 90% of the time. More situational awareness in high leverage situations would be preferred (i.e. - looking for pitches you can pull, looking for elevated pitches, etc. in the later innings of close games).

Greinke close to sigining with Dodgers. 6 year deal worth 145 Million

Assuming that goes down, they will have a 1-2 that rivals any team in the bigs.

Kershaw/Greinke
Cain/Lincecum
Strasbourg/Gonzalez
Verlander/Fister

Then throw in Kemp, Gonzalez, Crawford, the Arias wannabe...

They should be tough...

Los Angeles will become the first ever NL team with a $200MM+ payroll this year and they figure to boast the largest payroll in MLB history. They will also be the first team ever with four players making $20MM+ annually (Greinke, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Matt Kemp).

Woe is us! We may never win another game! We are being outspent! Time for management to open their wallets!

This does improve the Dogs. I think this Giants' team may just give them a battle, though. Gotta do it on the field, not on the balance sheet.
