I'm surprised it's reached this level considering his age. Would love to have him back so long as it fits within the team's budget.

This demonstrates the beauty of having a productive farm system.

Signing a free agent means paying not just more than you want to pay, but more than the highest bidder wants to pay. But the system works, esp for the fee agent stars.

Baggerly reports the Gs offer is 16/2 plus a third year vesting option based on games played.

Damn, that's a lot of cash. I was hoping for a 2 year $13.5m contract. Stupid Yankees ruin everything. :heh:

Let me be another to say I'd be fine with Arias taking over second if it meant a significant upgrade in the outfield. 3 years for Scutaro makes me nervous, especially with Pagan playing for us into his mid thirties.

Arias and Theriot can. If we lose Scutaro but gain Swisher that would work out fine. Scutaro wasn't going to hit .320 all year this year. In fact while I think he'd hit better than Arias, the delta wouldn't be so tremendous. Meanwhile if we do get Swisher we look something like this:

Pagan
Arias (?)
Panda
Posey
Belt
Swisher
Pence
Crawford

The problem is we now don't have a lock #2 hitter. We have a ton of 5 and 6 hitters. Maybe Belt hitting 2nd instead of Arias? Does he make enough contact? Swisher don't, nor does Pence.

He's not ideal, but he takes a lot of pitches, and gets on base at a good clip, so he's a good option to hit second. Although, I don't think Bochy would ever put him there.

Latest I've heard on Scutaro is that the Giants have a 2 year offer on the table with a 3rd year vesting option and if Scutaro declines, they may move on.

I think maybe an Arias/Crawford depending on matchup rotation would be the likely scenario.

Source: 3 year $20 million deal for Scutaro.

Everybody is confirming it. Scutaro is coming back. Giants are probably done, short of the January dumpster dives that Sabes usually does.

Talked very quickly about the Scutaro and Pagan signings on my radio show. "Three for the Win" Download on iTunes if you are interested. I am an aspiring radio host in college

The years and salary commitment make me nervous. But hell, I'm damn happy he's (apparently) coming back.

Just like Pagan's deal, we'll probably be overpaying him for that last year. But that's how the game is played today.

And maybe we get lucky and he's ageless like that other Venezuelan infielder Omar V.

I'm actually more worried about the flukiness of his time with us. He was terrible in Colorado the first half of 2012.

Better than I would have thought at this point.

Maybe the best strategy now with Pence is to sign him to the one-year arb at $13.8-ish and see if he performs better than he did with us last year. I love HP the person, HP the RF, but HP the hitter was a downside surprise. Maybe going through a full year without the anxiety of late 2012 will make him more relaxed. If he performs, maybe extend him in Aug/Sep. If not...

I can see Wilson now thinking 'where's MY overpay?'

It'll be weird having a spring training where there's literally no competition for any starting spots in the lineup or rotation. Just a backup OF and maybe a pen spot or two.
