All three Canadian girls did indeed make it through to the final 16 in the women's parallel giant snowboard event.

I was wondering that also. Then I noticed on the super-G slow-mo that their poles have a plastic protector around the handle that they use to deflect the gates, keeping them from hitting their bodies...I would imagine if they miss, it would sting quite a bit.
