I am sure there will be a lot of hockey-centric threads for the happenings at Sochi, but there will be plenty more to talk about. I figured we could have a general thread for all that will be seen in competition.

I will start it with this:

It's a little dusty in here.

SOCHI, Russia - The slopestyle snowboarding course at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games will be changed after the Norwegian favorite broke his collarbone during a training run on Monday.

However, International Ski Federation (FIS) organisers blamed Torstein Horgmo's injury on the jump he was attempting rather than the course at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park where the event is due to make its Olympic debut.

"He was just trying a really hard trick," FIS official Roberto Moresi told reporters after Horgmo was carried from the course on a stretcher following his crash.

The 26-year-old was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital where the break was confirmed, ending his Olympic hopes.

There was no shortage of criticism from Horgmo's fellow snowboarders after the first day of training.

American Charles Guildemond, who set up a snowboarder's union in 2011, described the jumps on the course as being similar to "dropping out of the sky."

Not sure exactly how the slopestyle courses are laid out, but if it's anything like the BMX Dirt or Street courses at XGames, Red Bull Rampage or Dew Tour... There are different lines. They encourage risk/reward. They entice the one with the biggest stones to make the biggest impact. As the courses got bigger, some skyrocketed to fame. And some (me, or more specifically my ankles) backed off.

And with this one being the first Olympic event for the sport ever, I'd bet it was "over-built". But them's the breaks, cupcake. If you don't want to compete, someone else will.

The course might be dangerous. Yeah. The SPORT is dangerous.

The Canadian favo(u)rite in slope-style (Mark McMorris) fractured a rib in Aspen during the X-Games competiton a couple of weeks ago. He's gonna give it a go (good Canadian boy and all, tape it up).

Adrenaline can mask a shit load of pain.

Whatever the course, you progress up to it, you don't just go out there and go for it on competition day;
Step 1) Try all the lines, see how you best maintain speed
Step 2) Dial in the gaps, so you can land and maintain speed consistently
Step 3) Throw in tricks.

I'm not expecting much from US, I'll root for them, but I'm well aware of our history overseas.
