I think Dipoto wants to do with Leblanc is hoping that he can have another productive season so that he can try and trade him at the deadline. Contending teams will always look for a pitcher to add to their rotation at the trade deadline.

Could be the free agent market which like last offseason is completely stalled. Machado and Harper pretty much have to sign for things to move at all.

Yea I agree EE will be dealt. My only hope the offensive side is they get a veteran SS. I think some kind of a hedge for Crawford or the next guy is needed

agreed

Exciting... I know i'm

in the minority here but I like what we've done in the offseason so far... I feel we're setting ourselves up nicely for the future... This is the best situation we've been in in a long time imo…

and agreed

I think with Kikuchi they probably really sold him on playing opening day in Japan which will be Ichiros homecoming and he will be a starting pitcher one of those days. Not to mention it would be great for TV when the mariners face the angels and it will be him vs Ohtani either as dueling pitchers or hitter. im glad we have him I was starting to think that seattle wasn't a market Japanese players didn't want to play in anymore

I think tampa is who I would like to trade EE TO

with the #35 overall pick in the draft and a couple prospects

that would give the mariners#20 # 35 #50 #77
maybe five in the top 100

that would not be bad at all going forward ...and hopfully set them up for years to come

acually it is # 20 #35= tampa # 59
right now till they do compensation picks
# 77 $ so it would be #97 right now
without comp picks

so a tampa trade would make 5
in top 100..that would be nice

Bleacher Report's Updated Farm System Rankings at the Start of 2019

    8. OF Kyle Lewis 23 3
    9. C Cal Raleigh 22 3
    10. RHP Erik Swanson 25 3

    Farm System Snapshot

Trades of James Paxton, Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz, Jean Segura and Mike Zunino have helped the Seattle Mariners restock a farm system that had been among the thinnest in baseball for several years.

Then they further bolstered their spot in these rankings by signing Japanese standout Yusei Kikuchi on New Year's Day in a move reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. Kikuchi and fellow offseason addition Justus Sheffield will likely both have a spot in the Opening Day rotation.

They're not the only prospects poised to make a 2019 impact. First baseman Evan White is on the cusp thanks to his advanced approach at the plate, Erik Swanson closed out last season in Triple-A and outfielder Braden Bishop has little left to prove in the minors.

With that in mind, the team's place within the top 10 is likely only temporary. Once Sheffield and Kikuchi exhaust their prospect status, there will be an inevitable slide down the rankings. Still, this system has come a long way in a short time.

Just Missed: OF Braden Bishop, SS Noelvi Marte, OF Josh Stowers, OF Dom Thompson-Williams

I just don’t really get it. Not happy nor sad just a perplexing move for a team that is “rebuilding” and trying to move payroll.

He could still be useful and effective for the next good Mariner team, or he could end up trade bait for more prospects in a year or two when you will need more to repelenish the farm

im fairly sure we will see swanson at some point..prob sooner rather than later

shefield may be next year ....cuz they have a lot of LHP to choose from

if we did see him before the trade deadline...i think it would be out of the pen
and even after as well

I’m not questioning his ability. I’m questioning the rationale of the move as, to me, it doesn’t signal this is a rebuild. Just another status quo move where they won’t be bad enough to improve the franchise nor good enough to win. I’d dance with the he is trade bait but that goes back to the whole Jerry is doing a rebuild ass backwards.

now is not the end of the rebuild ....it is the start of it...there are two years of time and trades to go

kikuchi will still be there....nice move

i like
Lucios Fox..ss..tampas #9 prospect......and the #35th overall...for EE
and any pitching prospect that would fit for the mariners

You would have to eat most of EE's money to get a return like that from Tampa IMO.

It's a totally fair question.

But at hte same time, Kuch (yes that's what i'm gonna call him lol) gives you a few things:

1) inniings (you have 162 games to fill with pitching anyway)

2) upside (he's 27 and could be more valuable if he performs as expected)

3) marketing (more japanese eyes and sponsor opportunities)

4) someone who might actually help you in say 2021 when the M's could be good again (and flush with cash to add reinforcements).

You're right it's not normal, but frankly if the M's could dump Seager and Leake, wouldn't signing a guy liek Machado or Harper make sense even if you're terrible right now?
