This isn't shocking. The reports was that Artie was having a pretty tough camp.
Artie signed to practice squad...

Interesting thing about Kelly is he was a 5th round CB picked out of Stanford...

For grins if nothing else, former Seahawks cut across the league:
  • WR Freddie Swain (Dolphins). Has since signed with Philly and appears to be cut again.
  • CB Sidney Jones (Bengals).
  • LB Tanner Muse (Steelers). Only played here in '21.
  • TE Nick Vannett (Texans). Sorta surprised he's still bouncing around.
  • DE Jacob Martin (Texans). Thought he was an up-and-comer when we traded him a few years ago.
  • WR Malik Turner (Colts). Probably best remembered for the playoff drop vs GB.
  • C Kyle Fuller (Broncos).
  • WR Philip Dorsett (Raiders). Only here for a cup of injured coffee.
  • OL Germain Ifedi (Lions). Flagged for a false start leaving town.
  • QB Alex McGough (Packers). Claim to fame of being the only QB the Hawks have drafted other than RW in the JS/PC era.
  • S Johnathan Abraham (Saints). Another cup of coffee guy.
Probably missed 1 or 2. Wouldn't mind kicking the tires on Jacob Martin if/when we have an injury hole to fill.
I had a good laugh at the bolded. Thanks for the morning chuckle, buddy.

We picked up Drake Thomas off the waiver wire from the Raiders and cut Jon Rhattigan.

I am admittedly a little biased, but not a fan of the Rhattigan cut. I thought he was playing well in pre-season.

I don't quite get why Drake Thomas was undrafted and now waived. Admittedly, I don't watch college football and likely wouldn't have seen many NC State games but looking at his hilite tape and his stats, he looks like a really solid player. Had a good pre-season too. Is it pass coverage deficiencies? Maybe one of you could enlighten me on his story because I think he could be really good learning from Bobby Wagz. Helluva depth piece, if nothing else.

Hawk fans confidence in our #1 overall pick... "Other" got more votes than he did... I voted for, Hall...

I think most fans are often susceptible to A) sky is falling syndrome and B) recency bias. There's also the reality that "we" didn't really know much about Devon Witherspoon before the draft, and there were a couple other more familiar players the team passed on which has caused some frustration in the fanbase. Witherspoon is a good looking talent to me; he'll get on the field soon enough, and I doubt it will take long before his popularity starts to build.

But in this poll, I would probably also vote for JSN just because of his expected role as the WR3 and simply playing a position that has more "production" friendly stats to count.

That's mainly because he missed a lot of pre-season.
I don't doubt that...

Speaking of Witherspoon, he did practice yesterday so that's a good sign...

I think it's really just his size, speed, and length. He's got great overall instincts and plays the ball but he may get bullied just because he's not that big. Anyone on defense that 'plays the ball' and goes for turnovers - Pete generally loves. Not a surprise to see us pick him up. With Bryant likely to see some time this year and probably Thomas because of his style of play and our inside LBer group being so thin (Witherspoon day by day but Adams already out) we should have a lot of forced fumbles.

If you could've added a couple inches, made him a bit faster/longer, and another 10 lbs he wouldn't have been a UDFA.

That is good. I'm thinking they wont start him week 1 though. I know it's a game time decision, but eh... with the Hawks at home (with what should be a pretty loud stadium after last season), Kupp basically day to day and the Rams outside of Donald having literally no talent on defense, I just don't see the Rams as a major threat.

I know that is definitely a trap statement and the Rams have abused us at home in the past, but they're just a different team now and all the spending/draft pick giveaways finally caught up with them. Stafford if healthy can beat you, so we can't take this game lightly, but marching Witherspoon out given his limited time and throwing him on Kupp sounds like a recipe for disaster.

AND, with the Lions the following week, we will NEED Witherspoon (and probably Adams). Lions I think will have one of the best offenses in the NFL.

Well, Jamal Adams just restructured and cleared up 6M of cap space this year (9M now total), but that makes him harder to cut next year..... this might mean Seattle at this point has no intention of cutting Adams - unless we're in play for a bigger free agent.. I think Seattle may be in play to make a move... could be interesting. $9M is a lot of cap space right at the start of the season.

As a result of the restructure, Adams will now have cap hits of $26.916M in 2024 and $27.916M in 2025, while the team would carry a dead cap charge of $20.833M in 2024 if he is released following the 2023 season.

should have just cut him we would have saved 8.5 million and only had a dead cap charge of 9 million next year. Now they are only getting 500K more this year over what they would have got to cut him but are paying a TON more the next two years.

Hmm actually they can cut him now next year ( Post June 1st ) and only take an extra 2-3 million on the dead cap but saved almost 9 million this year because of the restructure. Jamal better play in 16 games and play at a probowl level because i think they are getting tired of this BS. Man is being paid like a HoF player and all he has done is be a cheer leader.

Screamin' I think you're misinterpreting that or what you read... the cap hit this year for Adams was going to be about $18M. It's now $11M or so per your chart above. So you have $7M or so by doing what Seattle did for this year.

Couple things with that:

1) It allows us to potentially pursue someone this year (really don't need $9M of empty cap for a year),
2) Is a bit better as the cap keeps going up and most of our key pieces are secured at this point,

Now, it does make cutting Jamal Adams more costly next year... but a couple things on that:

1) When you cut a player post 6/1 the dead cap (which was huge to begin with even this year) gets spread over TWO years (not the contract life - which is why Russell Wilson is IMPOSSIBLE to cut at the moment - not impossible but pointless). Even a post 6/1 cut was very detrimental to us and really had no value towards saving money. Yes you'd be rid of him, but I don't think it makes any sense to give up that quickly.
2) Cutting Adams prior to 6/1 simply wasn't an option as the dead cap was massive as shown in your chart. Better to just keep him.

I'm not sure where you're getting 'we only save $500K more this year' because that's simply not true at all... We save a higher dollar amount of cap this year allowing us to target a decent free agent and then can deal with this next year. Again, I agree it doesn't make anything look better next year and $26M is ridiculous for a safety so I guess we'll just have to 'eat it' then... but it frees up moves this year.

We did not do this to free up $500K of cap this year.. we freed up $6M+.

Trade for Chris Jones? Or Chandler Jones?

I mean... I was thinkin' it mah man... but I don't think so. Chris Jones will want like a $30M per year contract. I think Seattle will absolutely trade or move on someone, but I think it'll be a lesser free agent or someone that may cost a 3rd.
