$130MM, as I thought, is the new payroll:

Twitter

tzill, what does this mean from a Beltran perspective? i.e. Do we have to part ways with Kepp? How would you guess this would impact the lineup (on the hypothetical that Beltran comes back for $15mil)?

I posted this in another thread around Halloween:
________________________________________________

Quick payroll update:

Under contract(13 Players)

Zito 19
Huff 10
Cain 15.3
Wilson 8.5
Franchez 6
Affeldt 5
Lopez 4.3
Posey 0.6
Bum 0.6
Belt 0.5
Crawford 0.4
Pill 0.4
Stewart 0.4
TOTAL: 71 MM

Arb Eligible -- Likely to Be Retained (9 players, with estimated salary)

Tim 19.2
Chez 5.2
Kepp 2.7
RamRam 2.3
Casilla 1.9
Song 2.5
Panda 3.2
Romo 1.3
Nate 1.2
TOTAL: 39.5MM

Arb Eligible, Unlikely to be Offered Arb (4 players)

Whitey
Torres
Fonty
Burriss

Free Agents (6 players)

Beltran
Ross
DeRo
PTB
Cabrera
Mota

By my estimate, that's 22 players at a cost of 110.5MM. Add in 13.6 for RoRo's dead money, and our 2012 ML payroll stands at $125.1MM with 3 open spot.

SP: Tim, Cain, Bum, Song, Chez
RP: Beard, Affledt, Lopez, Zito, RamRam, Casilla, Romo
C: Posey, Stewart
IF: Huff, Franchez, Kepp, Panda, Pill, Crawford
OF: Belt, Nate

Torres is estimated to bring in 2.5 in arb, which he's not worth. He's still got value, so I'd expect the Giants to decline arb and bring him back at 1.5 to 2. That leaves 2 OF spots at $127MM. Someone among Ford/Christian/Peguero is going to make the team at minimum salary.

That leaves on OF spot open and a standing payroll just north of $125MM.

Beltran is obviously the target, but Ross is a possibility as well. Cuddyer might be a fit, and would alleviate the need for Kepp and his $2.7MM. Another possible payroll shed is Chez and his $5.2MM, but I doubt he'd have much value to another team at one year of control and that salary. $1.5MM could be saved with Runzler instead of Casilla or RamRam. About the same could be saved with Fonty instead of Kepp if we don't get Cuddyer.

Crisp is going to get $6-8MM, and Beltran is going to command $12-15MM. I don't see how we're going to add either without spending well above $130MM and I'm not sure ownership will approve that.

One potential place to save would be Timmy -- we could backload a deal so that he only takes $15MM this year.

Putting this together:
Chez out, Melk in...savings of approx $1MM (est. $5.5 vs. est $4.5)
Kepp out, Fonty retained....approx $1MM
Backload Timmy....approx $5MM.

That puts us at about $120MM with this team:

C - Posey, Stewy
IF - Huff, Franchez, Craw, Panda, Fonty, Pill
OF - Melky, Nate, Belt, Torres
SP - Tim, Cain, Bum, Song, Zeets
RP - BWeez, Romo, Affeldt, Lopez, RamRam, Casilla, Runzler

One open spot, approx $119MM payroll. Beltran would push us to $135MM.

Another thought, how about Beltran on a 10/20 deal? Next year, about $40MM comes off the books (RoRo, Huff, Freddy, Affeldt, Melky, Song). Timmy, Cain, Posey, Panda, Romo, Nate would all be due raises from 2012, but there should still be money for Beltran if ownership is willing to go $135 or so.

Let's see what the BoSox offer. More than 2/30 and I think we'll pass.

Didn't Beltran say he only wanted to be traded to an NL team and that he wasn't willing to switch to a designated hitter's role last July?
Is it possible that his knees are shot and he has resigned himself to hitting some DH?
Or is he all about the money and what he can get.

Last July he was telling the Mets where he wanted to go so he could showcase himself and maybe win a ring.

Now that it's free agent time, he's going to go for the big $. And to be fair, they are ALL about what they can get, as they should be.

I still think he ends up in the AL, we have maybe a 20% shot at him. I hope we do get him though.

I'm not sure where he stands. We won't be able to outbid the BoSox in terms of years, but might get him on a two year $35MM deal.

If he's willing to take just 2 years, and our guys find room to write the check, I'd be very much in favor.

Just seems unlikely.

All the rumors I'm reading has the BoSox offering him two years.

This is as good a thread as any for this.

MadBum's 2010 stats:

3.21 ERA 1.21 WHIP 13-13

But, if you remove that disasterous 1/3 of an inning vs. the Twins (and I take full responsibility for that) you have:

2.86 ERA 1.17 WHIP 13-12

Question: does that get him into the top 5 in the CY vote?

I'd say no. It might get him a few more votes, but he's still an almost-rookie with a 13-12 record. If he were Tim or Matt or Cole Hamels then yes those stats = 4th or 5th in voting.

Interesting...so it's the rookie status that holds him back, IYO.

Better question: SHOULD those Twinsless numbers garner him a top 5 CY finish?

Yeah, just yakking here. IMO that's how he'd be looked at by the aggregate of voters. Should they? How do the current 5 look?

MadBum is going to be a top pitcher in the league, and I don't believe many people, besides fans like us, realize who the kid is and what he's capable of. He is pitching at Cliff Lee's level, and he's 10 years younger.

Rule V looms:

The Giants added Hector Correa, Charlie Culberson, Tyler Graham, Roger Kieschnick, Dan Otero and Angel Villalona to their 40-man roster

Graham and Otero are surprises....AnVil is a "procedural move" as he has no work visa.

Edit: Darren Ford and Waldis Joaquin DFA'd. Apparently, protecting AnVil was pragmatic on two fronts: One, other teams would claim him. Two, being on the 40 man could help him get his visa.

Shocked to see Waldis DFA'd and Christian and Eli kept. Not sure about the strategy there. Also, if my math is right, that leaves us at 40, so we can not participate in the draft or sign FAs without further cuts/trades. I am also surprised to see Graham on the list instead of Quinowski. I guess they feel Q is too far away for another team to take the risk.

Not surprised at all about Ford. In one of the last games, he came in as a pinch runner and almost immediately gt picked off. Kuip said something like "well, it was nice knowing you, Ford."

Per ESPN's Buster Olney's Twitter:

"Even though the Giants added Melky Cabrera, their priority is said to be (still) adding an outfielder. Carlos Beltran first on their list."

This could be a very stressful season coming up....if the Giants don't sign Beltran they are once again counting on everyone coming back healthy and producing...the couple young guys producing...and the staff being freakin' nails again....

No margin for error...

Even if they get Beltran they need everyone healthy and producing more or less. They won't be walking away with anything even with Beltran.

Mariners Willing To Include Cash In Figgins Trade: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

What do you guys think about this?

Depending on what we have to give up, I wouldn't think it is a bad idea if the Mariners are willing to kick in that much cash. He could be a nice utility guy, but there are obviously more important things the Giants need to address.

He has some speed, can play multiple positions and has OBP skills.
