MILWAUKEE -- New York Mets outfielder Juan Lagares resumed swinging a bat on Thursday afternoon, five days after he suffered a partial tear to a ligament in his left thumb while making a diving catch in Miami.

"He actually looked pretty good," manager Terry Collins said as the Mets prepared to open a series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. "He's going to take batting practice. And then we're going to try to get him to take some balls in the outfield and see if he can close the glove. And then we'll know a little bit more."

Collins suggested Lagares may even be available off the bench for the series opener against the Brewers.

"If he can catch the ball in batting practice, if I need him tonight, I'll use him," the manager said.

Assistant general manager John Ricco said earlier this week that the Mets believed Lagares can play through the injury the remainder of the season using tape and, possibly, a splint. Ricco added that surgery probably would be required after the season in that scenario. However, Lagares downplayed the necessity, saying it was "just a little tear."

Added Collins: "I talked to him this afternoon about the importance of not trying to be a hero here, where all of a sudden he's not playing the way we need him to play due to the thumb. If there's an issue, he needs to step up and tell us."

Morning Briefing: Welcome back, Kelly Johnson

MILWAUKEE -- Two days after he was acquired for minor league right-handerAkeel Morris, the New York Mets welcome Kelly Johnson back on Friday. Johnson is due to be activated for the 8:10 p.m. ET game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

Because Morris was on the 40-man roster, the Mets will not need to free any space for Johnson. They nonetheless will have to open a spot on the major league roster. Matt Reynolds would appear the most likely to be ticketed for Triple-A Las Vegas, with Ty Kelly seemingly the alternative.

Matt Harvey opposes (4-8, 4.95 ERA) opposes right-hander Junior Guerra (3-1, 3.61).

Harvey has allowed only one run in 14 innings over his past two starts.

Matt Harvey 'out of the woods,' but still with something to prove Friday

Neil Walker sore, but ready to contribute day after taking jolt to chest

Terry Collins said that Matt Reynolds remained over Ty Kelly primarily because Reynolds is more equipped to play shortstop. Asdrubal Cabrera is expected to get Sunday's series finale off, with Reynolds at shortstop.

Rene Rivera had caught Matt Harvey's last two starts, but Kevin Plawecki is in the lineup as Harvey's batterymate on Friday. Collins said that Plawecki has had two of the biggest hits on the road trip, and the Mets are prioritizing offense.

Mets promote Erik Goeddel to cover worn-down bullpen, demote Logan Verrett

Mets estimate Travis d'Arnaud will return in about a week

MILWAUKEE -- Slumping outfielder Michael Conforto is dealing with wrist soreness, New York Mets manager Terry Collins said Sunday.

Conforto is hitless in his last 10 at-bats and is hitting .098 (5-for-51) since May 24.

Conforto told Mets staff the wrist issue is not compromising him at the plate.

Alejandro De Aza starts over Conforto in left field on Sunday for the second time in the four-game series in Milwaukee.

Collins plans for Conforto to return to a starting role on Tuesday, when the Mets open a homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"He's got a little bit of a wrist issue that's been bothering him," Collins said. "He said it doesn't really bother him swinging. He's scuffling enough that I thought I'd let him have today and tomorrow to catch his breath."

As for David Wright's whereabouts right now while dealing with a herniated disk in his neck, the captain is out in Los Angeles, where his primary doctor, Robert Watkins, and his physical therapists are located. "That's really the best place for him right now," assistant GM John Ricco said.
