If Peter McNabb didn't get suspended for his actions at MSG, then the Ripper gets off with a verbal warning (and a game suspension in Chicago)

It was a long time ago, I don't remember what the repercussions were. I do know the fans started it. there was a scrum near the corner and some fans were grabbing Bruins players stick and trying to hit them with them. And that was a Bruins team that didn't take any shit from nobody, and I mean NOBODY

Wheel of Justice was kind to the Ripper

closest precedence was the Barnaby incident and he got 4 right ?... Rypien grabbed this fan for a grand total of 1.5 seconds ... this wasnt Pacers Pistons redux

Rypien has never been suspended, he claims he was eye gouged by staubitz and was in a rage, so much so, that he ended up pushing his team captain H Sedin on the bench right before pushing the fan and he's having to answer for that too

The evidence is circumstantial and happens in the blink of an eye, but a slow-motion replay of the Rick Rypien incident with a fan in Minnesota seems to show Rypien pushing Henrik Sedin out of the way - giving the Canucks captain a shove right where he wears his C - just before Rypien lunges at the fan in the stands.

After Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun tweeted about Henrik's reaction to Rypien's attack, I went back and watched replays of the event.

(Simmons tweeted: "How disinterested did Canucks captain Henrik Sedin look when Rypien grabbed fan? If you watch the replay, he saw it, then turned away.")

What I see is: Henrik puts his left glove on Rypien's left shoulder, presumably trying to calm him down. Rypien gives Henrik a bit of a shove out of the way and goes for the fan. As Canucks equipment manager Pat O'Neill moves in to intervene with Rypien, Henrik turns and moves away with what appears to be a look of disgust on his face.

If this is a more or less accurate account of what happened, it shows a tremendous lack of respect by Rypien for his captain, let alone a teammate.

You can watch yourself here: YouTube - Rick Rypien vs Minnesota Wild Fan

The Canucks had a travel day today and weren't available to the media, but in a pretaped segment called Two Minutes With ... broadcast before the Chicago game on the TEAM 1040, Henrik said of Rypien: "He's a great teammate and a great guy. I have nothing but great things to say about him."

Grabbing a fan by the shirt isn't tolerable and will be dealt with by the league.

Pushing your captain out of the way when he's trying to cool you down is intolerable on another level.

Henrik, correctly, took the diplomatic high road with his comments regarding Rypien, but it's an incident that will have to be dealt with in-house by the Canucks

I thought he'd get 10 (or possibly more). I really don't care all that much, I'm more concerned with the NHL fixing the rink setups so this isn't a possibility again.

/edit: quick everyone vote 6-10 before they close the poll! :p

wow Bettman takes the book he was gonna throw at Rypien puts it back on the shelf and ends up giving him a lollipop instead lol

ben kuzmas twitter:

"Fortunately, this incident is not typical of the way NHL players conduct themselves & is not typical of the way Mr. Rypien had conducted himself during his career"

McGratton weighs in:

ESPN Boston quotes Brian McGrattan on Rypien's 6 games: "What if that's me or Boogaard or a legit tough guy? Would be more."

Tough talk from a guy now in a different conference...

I was thinking 10. 5 for pushing the fan and 5 for pushing the ref. Most people were thinking 5 or 6 games though IIRC.

i didnt want to hijack your spector-mitchell thread dash

i just wanted to address the issue of media today and the blurring of lines between msm and the blogworld

today Rick Rypien will speak about his 6 game suspension for the first time and it seems like "reporters" are going to take the opportunity to ask him to delve deeper into himself ... ie explaining to the public why he took a 70 game personal leave from the team 2 years ago

blurring the lines further ... its a beat reporter writing on the newspapers blog site

An open letter to Rypien: Shows us another side in media scrum - The White Towel

another writer Matt Sekeres has written he spotted Rypien in a bar drinking after a game in which he was scratched because of the flu

interesting way this "story" is going in different directions

a couple of choice quotes from t'article.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has reportedly offered to take Engquist to dinner and provide him with a pair of tickets for another Wild game.

:L uhhh, way to step up Gary. That oughta scare him off.

One tweet questioned whether fans should wear body armour to games and another labelled Rypien a "coward."
irony alert. anonymously calling one of the toughest men in pro sports a coward from behind the safety of a keyboard.
