Im not going anywhere near the sports talk radio stations today..

Lindy Ruff is the longest-tenured coach in the National Hockey League. And though the Buffalo Sabres are slow out of the gate again, Ruff's job seems safe for now.

There have been some increasingly loud calls coming out of Buffalo for GM Darcy Regier to finally part ways with his good friend as the team could use a jolt. Regier has heard these calls, but that doesn't mean he's listening to them.

In an interview with Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, Regier reiterated that if somebody is being shipped away from the Sabres, it's not going to be his coach.

"The confidence I do have is in this team to turn this around, in Lindy's ability and in our ability to rectify that and that's because I think one of the of the areas Lindy as a coach is extremely strong in is defensive play. Offensively, we're fine [third in the East, sixth overall with 30 goals). But defensively we have work to do.

"And when you think of where we are defensively, If I had a coach to pick to shore that up, Lindy is the guy. And it's not just all on Lindy by any means. We have to work together to get this turned around."

I would say it's surprising how reluctant Regier is to make a move on Ruff, but really it's not -- at all. I'd also say that he's probably in a position that he can't say anything else, but he was pretty emphatic in his support of Ruff.

The two have been tight for a long time, and Ruff has had the support of his general manager despite making the playoffs only twice in the past five seasons and not winning a postseason series since 2006-07. It seems like as long as Regier is there, Ruff will be on the bench.

The reasoning interestes me. Regier said the problems are on defense and Lindy does D, so he's the guy to have when you need that problem fixed. The Sabres are giving up a league-worst 3.70 goals per game. Is that out of character for Ruff teams?

Yes, but it's not like he has a record similar to Ken Hitchcock's, either. In the past six seasons, the Sabres have finished 18, 18, 4, 14, 22 and 13 in goals-against-per season. Take out the extremes, and you're looking at the definition of a middle-of-the-road defensive track record.

And to suggest that offense isn't a problem is being a bit misguided, too. Yes, the Sabres are scoring, but it's mostly being done by the duo of Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek. They aren't getting production across all of their lines. While that might work for a while -- especially when you have somebody as good as Vanek -- it's not the best way to go about your business, relying on so much from so few.

Regier said he has been exploring the trade-market possibilities but things are all quiet on that front, which makes sense given that every team remains in the playoff conversation.

I said at the beginning of the season that I actually don't think any coaches will be fired midstream, and I am not going to change there. Ruff would seem like a good candidate considering he overseas a team with relatively high expectations, has been on the job for a while and his team is not performing all that well. That ignores his relationship with Regier, though.

No matter their feelings for Ruff, it sounds like Sabres fans are going to have to put up with him for at least another year. When you've been together for 14 seasons, what's another half season?

The team looks disorganized and unmotivated in the 3 games I've seen them in this year Boss. It looks like the message has gotten old for the players.

A small sample size but they haven't looked good, with the exceptions of Vanek and Pominville (maybe you guys need to trade the captain:eyebrows:).

Ruff needs to go, IMO. Of course as a division rival I say keep him right where he is.

Sorry to hear that, Boss - I think the Sabres need a new voice behind the bench.

/I was also cringing when I heard that Ruff might be part of the 2014 Canadian Olympic team coaching staff - I say stick with your Canadian cock (Bab and Hitch)

That sums it up Kenny, Like the guy's on the radio were saying they have no identity. Ruff talks about this "system" all of the time and no one seems to know what this "system" is.

When a team looks disorganized and unmotivated that normally falls back on the coach. What I hate is when they talk about replacing him you always get the people that say "He will not be out of a job very long" my answer to them is "good so we will not lose any sleep about him being unemployed, because what ever he is doing is not working so why keep him?"

This team is better than their record and that falls on the coach. He doesn't have the excuse of the owner not spending the money anymore. It's about chemistry, even Ruff has said that's why the Vanek, Pommers and CoHo line has been going well. So here's a suggestion Ruff, STOP juggling lines ever time they come off of the ice because they didn't score. I was a long time Ruff supporter but the record speaks for itself.

Yeah, I'm not being a drama queen by saying this is depressing news but it sure is. Lets hope the fans keep yelling louder and louder because Pegula will not be able to ignore them much longer. He is a great "fan" and rich owner but there comes a time when the paying customer comes into play and they talk with their wallets too.

I'm OK with letting him finish out the season and then doing a proper coaching search in the off-season.

With how bad this team is, I don't see a coaching change alone suddenly turning them into a contender mid-stream.

I don't think he should be back next year though.

I agree and even if they have one of their late season surges that falls just short AGAIN he should be gone. Mr P. promised a "winner" and should not be happy with just strong finishes. Maybe Mr Pegula is too nice of an owner but sooner or later he is going to want some bang for his buck.

As he should. The Sabres are a top 10 payroll again this year and were 4th in the league last year.

If you're going to pay that kind of money, you should at least be able to make the damned playoffs.

I think there's far too much talent on the Sabres to waste the season. If Regier won't fire the coach, he needs to make a move.

Won't happen. Regier doesn't like making moves. Especially during the season.

Which is really a shame, because on the rare occasion that he does execute a mid-season trade, he generally comes out on top.

Look at the off-season even. They miss the playoffs again and his solution is to trade one of their top scorers in Roy for Ott (for the record, I'm OK with this trade because Roy was under-performing) and then to sign John Scott.

That's it.

I think one of the biggest problems with Darcy is he holds on to prospects too long. Garth Snow has done the same thing. Although in defense of Bailey & Okposo they were rushed a bit because the team sucked in a big way.

At some point you should know what to expect from a player & whether or not he fits long term. He should have traded Stafford a year ago.

I agree with alot of what has been said here.

We are in need of a coaching change but not sure really how much of a difference it would be if it happened now.

The team needs a kick in the ass in a bad way.

Well tonight's game should tell us a lot. They said that Ruff worked the teams asses off in practice worked on the PP and face offs where they have been terrible!! I hope Ruff worked HIS ass off too.

Montreal bitch slapped this team 6-1 in Montreal Saturday and if these players and coaches have any stones at all I would think they should be all over the Habs tonight in the F'N Center. If not....there is no hope.

Shit I may even put a decent vCash bet on them tonight.

I would change that to say that he holds on to SOME prospects too long. Unfortunately, he frequently holds on to the wrong ones and lets others go too soon.

Or even when he does retain them, he manages to F it up like he did with Vanek and getting suckered into matching the giant offer sheet.

Their PP has been terrible virtually every year under Ruff's tenure, so I don't expect any change there.

The faceoffs have got to improve though. Dead last right now, nearly 4 points behind the next worse, and 18 behind the best. That's a big part of why I wasn't happy with them moving Gaustad.

I was reading an article how they use him almost exclusively for face offs now and what a difference it has made for their team. He was always in the upper 50 to 60% range and it shows how important face offs are. I can think of at least four goals this year the Sabres have allowed as the direct result of cleanly losing the FO.

Yeah. Whenever you needed to win a big defensive zone faceoff, Gaustad was the man to take it.

I liked having him around for the PK too, and he was a nice big body to plant in front of a goaltender. I like that they got a 1st rounder for him, but I would rather have kept him.

To me it's like Major League and Slapshot - nothing left to play for except in this case the team is not moving or folding at the end of the season.

When a team has nothing left to play for, they shouldn't have any pressure and can surprise. Unless this team is just that disinterested in what Ruff has to say, then that's another story.
