Since the Yankees won 3 straight World Series ('98-'00) 15 different teams have won a World Series and no team has won back to back World Series.

Tell us again about the 4 team league.

It's heading towards that was the point. You are talking out your ass about 3 decades ago old man.

Really?

Since 2014, the Giants, Royals, Cubs, Astros, Nationals, Dodgers, Braves, and Rangers have all won World Series. Only the Dodgers won more than once.

Additionally, the Mets, Indians, Rays, Phillies and Diamondbacks made World Series appearances, but lost.

But yeah, 4 team league.

And?

What does this have to do with your contention that it's the money some teams spend that will kill the sport?

Like I said, baseballs regional nature works against itself when you have 6 teams that hog the vast majority of FA dollars. It hurts the rooting interests of middle to small market teams knowing they can't keep their developed talent. MLB does okay when you have NY/LA in a world series but when you have Texas/Arizona you get an all time low ranked world series.

No other American team sport has this issue.

That's not true. First of all, every sport is regional to some degree and you get lower ratings in championships just about any time it involves 2 smaller market teams because the fans in bigger markets are less likely to watch.

That's why when asked what his dream championship series was...David Stern facetiously said Lakers vs Lakers.

I doubt a Charlotte vs. New Orleans NBA Championship series would be a ratings bonanza for the NBA.

No other team sport has the element of seeming randomness and matchup potential that MLB does either, but that’s a Trojan side argument leaning towards parity in WS winners.

I think there’s merit to what you are saying also because it looks like certain teams can at-will sign the best FA players available to their team.

It’s a bit of a juxtaposition considering we are kinda going back and forth between popularity and players being fielded and the end result.

It’s an awesome discussion, you guys know the game better than myself, don’t mind me. :heh:

The ability for some teams to sign the best FA players has existed in baseball for decades. I can remember when folks used to accuse the Yankees of trying to "buy" World Series titles by signing all of the best FA's. Yet somehow, it never became a 1 team league.

Additionally, the ability to sign top FA's is also about how you build your team. The Dodgers, for example, put a ton of emphasis on building their farm system. This gives them the ability to develop players for the big league who come up on cheaper deals, thus freeing up money to fill in the holes with FA's. The quality of their farm system also allows them to trade for top players because teams that are looking to rebuild want their prospects.

Having the reputation for developing players helps as well as we just saw with Sasaki who chose the Dodgers even though every other team in MLB could offer him more money.

Noticed you're a dodgers fan. What a loser. Of course you'd lie about the sport. I'm a phillies fan and they bought a ton of players this time around, but I'm going to keep it real. Not like you.

Here is what sets baseball apart to this day. They have by far the strongest union in professional sports, some say it’s amongst the strongest unions in the world. Things will have to get bad enough for the billionaire owners to quit spending money to change that.

It seems like it should be a 4 team league.

But the reason why it works is because of the way and the duration for how young players are cost controlled.

Baseball is a young man’s game. And generally speaking, by the time players get through arbitration years and hit FA, most of the big deals end up being bad contracts by the 2nd half anyway.

And teams who trade their studs at the right time, get prospect hauls and develop talent well absolutely can be every bit as competitive as the big markets. Just only for small windows of time.
