No, it really isn’t.

Tua’s concussions were directly linked to his inability to protect himself while falling to the ground.
Break fall attempts are key on certain take downs. The idea is to tuck your chin AND make sure your palms hit the ground to help with impact. This isn’t really applicable in some situations in football when you’re carrying an object. Further, jiu jitsu is not exactly friendly on the joints.

I think he is slightly less worried about his joints then his final career ending concussion. Yes for when he's running with the ball he's obviously gotta be considering that but 7 times out of 10 we see qbs in the midst of just releasing the ball so in that they can focus entirely on landing as best they can (obviously doing so is often also with a large defensive player affecting that trajectory)

Tua seems to have the body awareness of a toddler when he is being taken down.

Any work in this area is good for him.

Break fall technique is something a day 1 white belt can master. It’s not this difficult concept that I’ve ever seen anyone struggle with. And for someone that has knack for getting injured consistently, that sport (jiu jitsu) isn’t going to help out.

I mean…

I highly doubt he is doing hand to hand combat.

Just a way of learning how to protect himself better.

And he needs that.

Jiu jitsu is not hand to hand combat and in terms of injuries and avoiding concussions- it’s not applicable.

Great.

I am sure you know a lot more about it than I do since I know virtually nothing.

Dude is trying to get better and you are knocking him. If he can’t learn how to avoid these impacts he won’t be in the league for long.

I made a statement about it being idiotic. His coaches suggested it to him. If that’s the case, I’m knocking the coaches for suggesting he do something they apparently have very little knowledge about. Stop being so sensitive.

I asked my son what he thought since he's training to be a professional MMA fighter and he's actually been working on his jiu jitsu lately.

He said that some jiu jitsu training, specifically around how to fall, could be beneficial in some aspects such as keeping his head from slamming into the ground and getting his hands in position to help break his fall.He said that any training beyond how to fall, would be a waste of time though.

He did say that, because of the nature of football, there are going to be times where it's going to be of little use because end of the day, a 300 lb. dude hitting a 160 lb guy is still advantage 300 lb. guy. lol

But, as he pointed out, if knowing how to fall does nothing but keep his head from being slammed into the ground, that's not nothing.

Interestingly, he also said that, as silly as it might sound, he might almost be better with some WWE training because most of what those guys work on is how to fall without getting hurt.

Wwe training would be more applicable, particularly the concepts they apply there. They definitely have to be aware of how to fall properly.

On a separate note, does your kid’s BJJ coach even have him train in a gi? The mma fighters I know don’t train in gi with direction to not really waste time.
