At least he had confidence in his guys
Plus, I totally forgot that if the Browns wait until after June 1st to cut Hooper they will save $9 out of the $11.25 dead cap hit. Also an option and that would provide a bigger role for Harrison Bryant. They can find cheap options for a 3rd TE.
We'll see. Ain't a done deal yet...
Pretty sure comes down to they like him more than Hooper (perhaps a lot more). Hooper will likely be gone on 6/1.Not sure I understand what they're doing at TE. They've brought multiple guys in since they drafted him, and now they tag him after a 36 catch season? Hooper was targeted more, Bryant had a better catch percentage, etc. He is more of a big play TE, I'll give him that, but enough to tag him?
Yes...and Njoku has made himself into a very good blocking TE.He was way more productive from an offensive standpoint than Hooper and it isn't close. Hooper is a very good blocker but been overall disappointing. Njoku just hasn't been the opportunities, if he was he would be a top 5 TE type of production. Hopefully he gets more opportunity and then Hoop is gone next season.
Guessing the Browns put him at the top of that group and you preferably pay a TE based on what you think he'll do and not what he's done. That said, isn't to say it's not a bit of an overpay but I'd rather overpay him than the FA TEs you listed.Projecting someone who doesn't get opportunities (whether due to scheme or health) to be top 5 is a bit of a stretch IMO. There are some really solid players that can't all be top 5 before you get to Njoku; Andrews, Kelce, Kittle, Waller, Goedert, Gronk, Schultz, Hockenson, Ertz, Thomas, Pitts, Gesicki, Knox, Tonyan, Fant, etc.
I understand wanting to retain Njoku, but the tag seems excessive. Especially when you consider the free agent TEs that are FA this year: Gesicki, Schultz, Gronk, Everett, Engram, Uzomah, Alie-Cox, etc. Njoku is somewhere in the middle tier of that group IMO.
Franchise tag # most are saying for TEs this year is just under 11 mil.Where are you getting 10 million? If you get last year's salaries to create his salary you're at 15 million. If they include what players will sign for this off season you could see that climb to as much as 17 million. For a Tight End with 36 catches?
Move made sense at time as top TE on market but Berry missed on this one, I think. He's almost certainly gone then.
That’s crazy. They must have changed the rules. It used to be the average of the top 3 at the position. Last season that was 15 mil 14.6 and 14.5Franchise tag # most are saying for TEs this year is just under 11 mil.
Gotta love how balanced the NFL is with their punishments...
