They need a great route runner that has a large catch radius. Baker needs someone he can really trust, even with tight coverage. No body catchers or speed only guys. Of course, that's what everyone is looking for....
Yeah that would be ideal. I really love Burks...

Not sure I understand what they're doing at TE. They've brought multiple guys in since they drafted him, and now they tag him after a 36 catch season? Hooper was targeted more, Bryant had a better catch percentage, etc. He is more of a big play TE, I'll give him that, but enough to tag him?
He was way more productive from an offensive standpoint than Hooper and it isn't close. Hooper is a very good blocker but been overall disappointing. Njoku just hasn't been the opportunities, if he was he would be a top 5 TE type of production. Hopefully he gets more opportunity and then Hoop is gone next season.

Projecting someone who doesn't get opportunities (whether due to scheme or health) to be top 5 is a bit of a stretch IMO. There are some really solid players that can't all be top 5 before you get to Njoku; Andrews, Kelce, Kittle, Waller, Goedert, Gronk, Schultz, Hockenson, Ertz, Thomas, Pitts, Gesicki, Knox, Tonyan, Fant, etc.

I understand wanting to retain Njoku, but the tag seems excessive. Especially when you consider the free agent TEs that are FA this year: Gesicki, Schultz, Gronk, Everett, Engram, Uzomah, Alie-Cox, etc. Njoku is somewhere in the middle tier of that group IMO.

The Ohio State guys would be easy fan favorites, but London should be on their radar too IMO. He got those numbers without having another stud WR on the other side of the field, earning those stats even though the opposition knew the ball was going to him. Of course, his injury comes into play though.

I'm not suggesting he will achieve to be a top TE just giving you reason why they tagged him before either letting him go or committing long-term. The tag makes sense for his role but the coaching needs to put him in better situations to succeed. He has proved at times to be a dangerous weapon.

I imagine him with great QB play and opportunities and he could be a breakout player, I don't question that for a second but yet to happen at this point.

And you list, only a couple guys stand out. You have to pay them more and commit more years....that is the point, only one year. The Browns have plenty of money and likely more if Landry is cut. The $ at TE isn't ideal but it could be worse. The Pats are paying Henry and Smith over $30M this year and possibly next year. Henry worked out but not sure why you give Smith that much money. I'd rather spend $10M on Njoku then $30M on Jonnu the next 2 years...hit or miss in FA. They just have to utilize Njoku...not surprised, the coaching staff was poor last year at times.

He could very well be a Michael Thomas type of WR but the last thing the Browns need is another injury-riddled WR. Great production and player but more question marks than the others. But as far as type of WR he fits the bill.

Where are you getting 10 million? If you get last year's salaries to create his salary you're at 15 million. If they include what players will sign for this off season you could see that climb to as much as 17 million. For a Tight End with 36 catches?

He signed the tag for $10.8M but it appears it is technically $11M for the 22-23 season

Then I haven't followed the rule changes to the tag. I thought it was the average of the top 3 at the position. All 3 of the top guys make 15 million per season.
Yeah I'm not sure how it works tbh

Plus, I totally forgot that if the Browns wait until after June 1st to cut Hooper they will save $9 out of the $11.25 dead cap hit. Also an option and that would provide a bigger role for Harrison Bryant. They can find cheap options for a 3rd TE.

Calvin Ridley suspended for all of 2022 for gambling on games. These Bama guys often struggle with the transition. Just because rules are only suggestions at Bama doesn’t mean the rest of the world isn’t going to hold you accountable when you break rules.
