Do we really consider the Guardians as potential buyers?
For a hitter, yes but not Soto. They always get the best out of their great young pitchers and seem to trade them away at the right time but it’s too early in Bieber. I dont believe that for a second even with all the pitching talent in their farm system

could also argue they'd kind of be selling low to move him now. Unless they really think he's going to regress badly.

yes......they almost have to be because of the 40 man roster situation.

They have too many good prospect at the higher levels of the minors that they could potentially lose for nothing since they cannot protect them all this winter. Now- maybe they wait until the offseason- its a possibility- but they have too many guys.

In a normal year for a normal team- even a normal Guardians team- guys like Call and Brennan and Benson at AAA- all 3 who are mashing- would be pretty hyped guys that we as fans would be very excited to see. Now- they are just fringe top 10 guys.

Guardians only have 2 true top 30 prospects- Espino and Valera- but their depth is just absurd. They are going to have to consolidate and trade some of these guys- and while only down 3 games in the Division with the youngest roster in the sport by far- it might make sense for them to pull the trigger right now.

Only issue I really see is that beside Soto- Reynolds is really hte only + bat with multiple controllable years on the market.

Guardians right now have a very cheap and pretty solid SS in Rosario- who still has controlled years left--- but in the minors- even if you just leave Gimenez at 2B- they still have 3 guys that are SS's in Freeman, Arias and Rocchio- who are all very highly rated prospects- all consensus top 100 prospects in the minor leagues. Angel Martinez and Jose Tena are also guys thought of at SS to have bright futures. Keith Law had Tena - who is super young at #68.

In the outfield they just brought up Kwan, Jones and Gonzalez---- but still have Valera, Brennan, Call, Benson, Halpin in the minors.

They are just going to have to get over the fact that theres a chance they might trade the wrong guy and make a move- since if they dont they are going to lose some of these guys for nothing.

pretty cool blurb on Espino from FanGraphs:

We’re at a point where we think Espino is a unicorn of sorts and we moved him into 60 FV tier based on how he’s looked this spring. His stuff is comfortably better than Jack Leiter’s, as is his command, and he’s further along the minor league ladder. His velocity and track record of health are better than those of recent No. 1 pick Casey Mize. In a typical draft, a college pitcher like Espino would be the heavy, heavy favorite to go first overall.

-Keith Law does not even have Espino as #1 in the system- he has that for Rocchio- who is behind Arias and Freeman on the SS depth chart because of age.

Epic POS. Has another good stretch to do before he gets out of prison.

Sure, they may buy some unheralded role player for a few mil. I wouldn't expect any news worthy transactions however. They don't appear willing to pony up big money to any of their young players. Arbitration or trade.

I'm fascinated to see what they do at the deadline as so many different ways they can go. Much, of course, could depend on how they play the next week, but hard to imagine much change one way or other in division/WC race.

as much as I'm not a fan of the Dolans penny pinching ways I don't have much of an issue not being willing to offer mega deals to guys like Lindor received. I'd just like them to at least spend league average overall, maybe a little more, when able to contend.

If you don't keep your young talent long enough, what is the likelihood of contending?

with this FO if they'd just spend league average I like our chances.

That's nearly a $77M jump, more than doubling their current payroll. Do you really see that happening? They're currently 27th.
