This the same guy who the past 6 years has been averaging 5.7 innings a start?

Maybe in a 7 inning little league game we can classify that as an "innings eater," but not a 9 inning game.

Please list pitchers since Zito came into the league who have pitched more innings than him.

Case closed.

It matters. The Giants may not have made the playoffs without him last year. And they certainly wouldn't have beat the Cards in the NLCS. Then you factor in his innings over the course of the century so far. He's not in this conversation, IMO. Overpaid sure, but overpaid with two rings and a lot of time spent on the mound. (One ring was earned while watching, but still.).

Just guessing here, Mark Buerhle, Bronson Arroyo and Big CC. All innings machines. And I love me some innings machines.

Zito is absurdly overpaid but shouldn't be in the same sentence with Pujols, Hamilton or A-Rod. It's ludicrous.

How many active pitchers have been full-time starters since that stretch? 10 maybe if we're lucky?

And Zito remained in the rotation some years because of the silly notion that "you don't bench players making that much"....I mean, had Zito been making $500,000 instead of $15M+, do you really think makes 32 starts in a year such as 2008, when he was horrendous?

Similar to A-Rod, Pujols at least earned his contract.

Guys like Howard, Wells and Zito never deserved the money they got.

BJ Upton is also up there. Never earned close to what the Braves gave him.

This ^. I feel like that fucker should pay ME to watch him play. :tsk:

Never said or agreed to anything of that nature...I'm arguing the notion that he's a "workhorse"

Arroyo didn't become a full-time starter until 2004, but he's thrown a lot of innings since them (only 300 less than Zito despite pitching a total of only 204 innings from 2000-2003).

Buehrle's got 300 more innings than Zito and started the same year as Zito

CC's got 200 more innings than Zito

Halladay is ever so slightly ahead in innings with Zito (only 7 more), and that's with Halladay not become a full-time starter until 2002

Derek Lowe has about 150 less innings, and that's with him spending 2000 and 2001 as a reliever

Oswalt's got 300 less innings, although something around 75 less starts

Pettitte's got about 150 less innings, with him being 'retired' for a full season

Hudson's got about 100 more innings

The point being that Barry Zito has been an innings-eating workhorse forever.

Or that he's played longer/started more games than most pitchers. That doesn't necessarily equate to workhorse, especially since roughly half that span he was averaging 5.7ish innings.

Add Livan Hernandez to the list, who has more innings.

Solid research. Those are significantly less innings. And solid excuses as to why each pitcher has less. Well done. How many times have each of those pitchers respective teams went 12-0 in the stretch run prior to an eventual World Championship?

Between 2019-2021, Pujols is set to make $87 million.

I'm going to guess he will be overpaid since on the books, he'll be 40, and off the books, he'll be 45.

14:$23M, 15:$24M, 16:$25M, 17:$26M, 18:$27M, 19:$28M, 20:$29M, 21:$30M

The first thing is I've never said he's the most overpaid or even in the conversation (as I'm aware there have been guys who've been collecting large paychecks while not playing). I don't know where you and Hammer interpreted that from, but I've never said nor implied it.

What I am arguing (and have been the entire thread) is Hammer's ridiculous notion that "he's a workhorse and always has been." Maybe it's me, but someone averaging 5.7 innings/start for 6 years doesn't paint the picture of a workhorse. Merely making more starts than other players during XYZ span doesn't make him a workhorse. Going deep into games is a big part of being a workhorse, not just staying on the field and pitching longer.

Aren't the Mets still paying Bobby Bonilla?

Hey, I just realized, with all the money they are still paying him, the Wilpons could have done something worthwhile, like maybe some investments?

On second thought...nah. :laugh3:

The little league comment was a bit much for me. When there are what, four guys with more total innings?

Yeah they are and this is what my answer was going to be.... Better yet reason they are paying him because they took his salary and invested it with Madoff
