I've gotta go with A-Rod.

Not even so much for the PEDs as for the fact that he's such a huge embarrassment to the sport.

I'm kinda torn about what's going on now, part of me wants to see the Yankees get fucked by paying that contract, but the other part would love to see A-Douche get the shaft.

Albert Pujols. Not even close. He's going to get exposed for 'roids and the Angels will still owe him an faverage og $26.5M for the rest of his career.

A-Rod > Pujols

Carlos Lee, Vernon Wells and Johan Santana could maybe round out my top five. But maybe not. I'm not sure what Bonilla is making this season.

The Giants paid Zito $126MM for a 4.55 ERA (despite pitching in an extreme pitchers park) and 3.9 WAR. That was a pretty big waste of money.

At least A-Rod was once great, and at the time he signed the contract was one of the best players in baseball. The Yankees still drastically overpaid him for no reason, but he still would have walked away with a 7-8 year deal worth $24M-25M per season had the Yankees played hardball.

The obvious choices to me are Vernon Wells and Ryan Howard. Ryan Howard had one season where he was a $25M per year player, and he was 4 years removed from that season when he signed his contract. By the time he signed his contract, he was a rapidly-declining, all-or-nothing DH who was not long for the league. And he wasn't even a free agent yet.

Vernon Wells was a nice player, but was never close to a $20M per season player who could carry a franchise. Toronto had no reason for giving him that contract. By the time he signed his contract, he had only had two great seasons, and was extremely inconsistent.

Barry Zito is also up there. He was little more than a junkballer by the time he hit free agency.

At least Johan Santana earned his big contract.

Similar to A-Rod, Pujols at least earned his contract.

Guys like Howard, Wells and Zito never deserved the money they got.

BJ Upton is also up there. Never earned close to what the Braves gave him.

Jamarcus Russell in football.

I think I'll go with A-Rod in baseball. Doesn't matter if you "earned" it, if you aren't meeting expectations you are overpaid.

Are you from this planet? The Angels will be paying Pujols $26.5M til he's 44. There is no "earned." He is still "earning."

Zito is an innings-eating horse and has been his whole career. Comparing him to Pujols who can't walk to first, leads the league in strikeouts and inning-ending DPs at $26.5M per is ludicrous.

A-Rod is a good one, he should be named already, but I'm going Beckham...I don't think he increased anything for soccer in the US.

This the same guy who the past 6 years has been averaging 5.7 innings a start?

Maybe in a 7 inning little league game we can classify that as an "innings eater," but not a 9 inning game.

Great point above about the folks that earned it.
I still think Kevin Browns 15 mill a year at the age of 35 was a reach due to age but once again he did earn, have a few good years but that final year making 15 million with a 6.50 era was great.

And you can never forget....Operation Shutdown...4.5 a year to NOT play.

Or the 2001 Pirates for that matter. Top 10 contracts on the team totals 41 million to win 62 games.

Over 180 innings in all but two seasons this millennium. How many other guys can say that? It must be his contract that's kept San Fran from winning titles..... Wait, nope.

Does it really matter, considering not many guys today have been around that long to begin with? When did 180 innings/season become the benchmark for being a "workhorse," especially when about half those years he was averaging under 6 innings a start.

pujols/BJ upton/crawford/werth may end up being bad but only in early part of contract but these have already been wastes

batters

arod 275 mil 628 games 130 hr 451 rbi 129 ops+

wells 126 mil 736 games 113 hr 367 rbi 100 ops+

pitchers

santana 137 mil 109 gs 46w 3.18 era 1.2 whip 127 era+

zito 126 mil 202 gs 62 w 4.56 1.53 88+ but won 2 WS games

hampton 120 mil 147 gs 56 w 4.81 1.53 96+

are CC and JV the next 2 really bad contracts?:suds:

its not just the mets with bobby

The Mets will pay Bonilla $1.2 million annually for the next 25 years despite him not having played for them since 1999 or in the big leagues since 2001.

Bonilla totaled five seasons with the Mets and hit .270 with a .356 on-base percentage, hit 95 home runs and drove in 295, but he was considered a malcontent and the Mets wanted to get rid of him after the 1999 season.

Bonilla is also being paid $500,000 annually by the Baltimore Orioles until 2015 for a similar buyout and he holds a “special assistant” job with MLB that pays him $200,000 a year.

sounds like bobby was pretty smart :suds:
