Side note.... I just assume everyone was on roids during that era... Batters and pitchers...
I think that is an overstatement, but probably more accurate than not.Side note.... I just assume everyone was on roids during that era... Batters and pitchers...
Maybe, but the steroids seem to benefit the hitters more. I guess for pitchers it might reduce healing from injuries. (Which is maybe why Clemens kept coming back for a season or half season to make another 10 million or whatever). But just based on the eye test, if Randy Johnson, Maddux, Glavine, etc. were on roids they must have been a different kind from the ones that a McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Canseco, Dykstra was taking.Side note.... Yeah, I guess they broke the seal on DHs so that made it easier.Edgar was a superior hitter (and a much better fielder than he gets credit for). I say this as a Sox fan.
David Ortiz is an embarrassment in the Hall of Fame ... "Sweet" Lou Whitaker had 20 WAR high than Ortiz and played an excellent Second Base. Lou Whitaker also never did PEDs, Gambled, Drank Liquor, and never argued with an umpire, and he got 2.9% of the vote.David Ortiz
plays several years as an average player
takes steroids and changes team
becomes a MVP player
media darling cracking jokes
likely 1st ballot Hall of Famer, because Steroids don't matter if you joke with 55 year old geezer sportswriters
Barry Bonds
plays several years as an MVP player
takes steroids and changes team
becomes best player ever arguably
surly reserved introvert with media
likely does not get in 10 tries, because Steroids is all that matter in the hypocritical views of 55 year old geezer sportswriters
holding my breath.....expecting them to do the right thing and be consistent....

ok, that's a pretty good exhibit A. Do you think he found a connection in Canada?
he had a 176 ERA+ in 1994, not too far removed from 1997-98.
that '96 Red Sox team was also brutal defensively
Actually Nolan Ryan put up some numbers when he was 41-42. Has there ever been any speculation on him? It was 1989 too. Maybe he was an inspiration for Palmeiro."the twilight of his career"

We turn a blind eye to pre-90's guys.

I wish I could remember where I read this article, but a number of years ago, someone wrote a piece about how Aaron very well could have been using some kind of performing enhancing drugs, such as greenies, in his 40s, which would explain the strong end of his career. We won't really know but the article had some compelling points.I read that greenies gave guys a big boost.

Apparently, according to this article, the Historical Overview Committee has to be make the recommendation that they get onto the ballot for the Today's Game Era Committee. There's a couple of steps there they can still get left out.I was just reading about the next opportunity for Schilling, Bonds ,Clemens, Sosa. It's something called the Today's Game Era committee . It is the same committee that just elected Harold Baines. So there's that.
