If Kontos is optioned, he will not be eligible for post season without some roster gymnastics. If Hensley (or Kontos) is DL'd, then they are both eligible without any gymnastics needed.

I sense a stubbed toe for Hensley.

Ahhhh, I thought it was a week, and I didn't know if that got thrown out the window with expansion to the 40-man. Thank you, sir.

There is no expansion of the 40. There is only an expansion of the 25 TO 40. The 40 is still the 40.

Only downfall I see with doing that route is that either Hensley or Kontos won't be pitching for 15 days (the minor league season ends in 7), so when they come back, they may be out of sync and won't have the opportunities to get back into form with more arms joining the Pen.

Basically, whichever guy goes on the DL will likely become useless anyway. So, Hensley has a sore toe hopefully.

good point. I tried to rep you, but fascists and all...

I am too lazy to look it up, but there has to be SOMEONE who has not played in a while who can stub their toe and we can retro-actively DL them...

Looking at the 40-man, they COULD call up Kieschnick, then DL him allowing Kontos to come right back. Or Freddy Sanchez, then put him on the 60 day DL..... maybe that's why he's been on the 15 day all along

I also see Whiteside listed twice which scares the shit out of me, 2 Whitesides is 2 too many.

Certain posts make me wish that I hadn't repped a poster earlier in the day. This is one of those posts.

Calling up RK for this purpose would use up an option for him. Not sure the benefit is enough for that cost. Also, I am not sure this offers the gymnastics needed.

My understanding of the playoff eligibility is that anyone on the 25 or DL on Sept 1 is automatically eligible. For anyone else to be added, the DL needs to be used DURING the playoffs to drop the playable number below 25.

Using RK as a DL holder does not add any flexibility.

That's why you DL Hensely, assuming no one else has a legit injury. He's been around long enough to know how to keep himself in sync. Plus, he probably really is hurting somewhere, and therefore could use the time off. This fact, combined with how awful he has been in the last several weeks makes him the no-brainer candidate. He has to willing to cooperate. of course.

Agreed. But when he returns by mid-September, how many reps will he get where he can be deemed effective? There may be 4-5 guys added to that Pen on top of Mota. My point is that they'd be basically telling Hensley you're done for this year (baring injury to Romo, Casilla, Affeldt, Lopez, Mijares, Kontos, Mota), but we need you to do this so we can get your replacement. Whoever goes down, Kontos or Hensley, will basically be done this year.

I wouldn't say that about Hensley. Kontos, maybe. Two weeks off for Hensley shouldn't effect him much at all, at this point in the year. A couple of bullpen sessions and a live low leverage game situation, and he'd be good to go.
