He is a fantastic coach, have been saying this for years. Funny that in the state of Louisiana, probably 3rd on the list of coaches is Les Miles. The best is almost a tie between Hud and Curtis Johnson at Tulane.

The guy would be great for recruiting the south for any major program IMO.

He can coach em' up too.

I've been raving bout him for a couple years. To put things in further perspective, the last time ULL had won eight games before he was hired was 1993, and I can't even figure out when the last time they won nine games was (at least the 1960s, possibly ever). His teams are disciplined, solid football teams. You watch them and you can just tell they are well-coached. At some point, he'll get a gig. If you keep winning, it's only a matter of time.

Is it too soon for a major program to take the gamble on him? I'd think he could be brought in for a very reasonable salary at this point. ($1.5-$2 million?)

Sure he's had success in high school, D-2(?), and now 2.5 years at a mid-major, but stepping up to AQ BCS level is even more challenging with a higher level of expectations. Being 44, he would be a 15-20 year HC for a school if he pans out.

It is a major risk/reward deal. I think it is worth the risk with a guy that can possibly be a program kind of coach. For ULL's sake I hope he stays put, but I can't blame him for leaving once someone calls him up this off-season.

If ULL finishes (8-0)(10-2) I think he's gone to at least an above average BCS AQ school. That would be from (6-2), (6-2), to (8-0). Not out of the question considering he's already knocked out the 2 traditional Sun Belt leaders. (10-2) and a clear conference title looks likely at this point.

Who's likely to be looking for a HC at this point?

We know USC, Texas, and UConn. I doubt USC or Texas rolls the dice, they go big for the sure thing imo.

I'm thinking Mississippi State. Mullens has done nothing at MSU, he has only beaten 3 SEC teams with records over .500 in over 40 attempts. Seems like they would be willing to take a chance on a guy who is already familiar with the area, and his name is being talked about there as well.

He was born in Mississippi as well.

Yeah, Mullen was a big risk. He's another example that just because you're a good coordinator, it doesn't automatically make you a good head coach (CEO).

This is where Nebraska failed with Pelini, and where Pelini has failed himself by surrounding himself with coordinators (offense, defense, and strength&conditioning) that had ZERO experience at those positions.

Huge gamble to think a traditional elite program can carry a coach as opposed to hiring a guy who's proven to lead at the highest level in maintaing or bringing the program back to elite level.

A proven head coach generally made something out of nothing (as CEO) somewhere prior.

Hud is an old UNA coach. Come to think of it, there are a bunch of old UNA coaches out there.

Hudspeth spent seven seasons in Florence and put the Lion program back at the top of Division II, winning 64 games and making five playoff appearances. Under Hudspeth’s direction, the Lions reached the NCAA semifinals three times, the quarterfinals twice, and had five seasons with 10 or more wins.

Watching his team Tuesday night was very impressive. They're a physical football team, that plays the game the "right way." Keep winning football games, and he'll get the attention.

I look at him similarly to Gary Andersen. Keep on the same track, and I'm sure Hudspeth will a job at a bigger program.

Whoever gets this guy will be lucky to have him, imo. They will also get him at far less than he is worth. He will not/should not be at the same school next year.
