That seems to have been a problem since they switched Montero, Jack got his catcher of the future but hasn't gotten another viable catcher so he's had go the route of rushing him. I really wish they would've worked with Montero being a 1B but still let him catch every now and then so there would be an option.

montero had zero future as a catcher with any franchise, even as a backup

Would be nice to see Montero get another shot. Yes he still has holes in his game but I think it's safe to say Lomo isn't what you need out of major league 1st baseman anyway. It's shame that main things keeping in the minors is poor roster construction and probably a grudge over the past events.

Reflecting on it, the Mariners probably would've been better off not trading for Trumbo and calling up Montero.

Agree... I've been saying this all along... It was a waste...

Which was my main confusion with the Trumbo trade. Castilla wasn't great by any means but he was a huge upgrade over Sucre and allowed Zunino to get more rest. Had they just called up Montero instead of dealing for Trumbo, they might not be a better team right now but there would be one less hole to fill....and didn't someone post that Zunino stats are better after a day off?

The whole thing with Montero is so pathetic that Jack's politics and ego are the reason he isn't with the club. Jack's proven he isn't GM material with 90% of his moves but with the Montero position he's showing he can't handle any leadership position in any organization. Time for him to go back to being a yes man and taking credit for other scouts opinions and the developmental system turning his picks into MLB players.

Here's something that has gone completely unnoticed. Steve Baron, the Mariners other 1st round pick in the Dustin Ackley draft, is hitting .365/.420/.476 since his AAA call-up. It's in just 18 games but I'm at least watching him now. Baron was supposed to be a great defensive catcher coming out of High School. If he can do anything at the plate its a huge plus.

It's not that it's gone unnoticed for me. I see the numbers, but I also the numbers from the past. I have seen very little of Baron behind the plate. So I won't speak to that but I've seen him hitting a handful of times now and I must say, the guy seems like a K machine. I don't think he can continue to hit with this avg. my guess is his avg. drops 100 points by the end of the season. Don't get me wrong I'm glad he is doing well but I don't see the talent translating to sustained numbers yet. Best thing for him is to pile up AB's gain some experience at the plate.

Sounds like a great addition to our lineup.

It kind of doesn't matter what the average is for the backup catcher or how many times he strikes out with how Sucre has played.

His minor league career everything is worse than Sucres. I'll take Sucres 12% minor league K rate over Barons 25%+ K rate all day. If the backup catcher is going to have less than 30 AB's through half the season what is the point in replacing him with someone who is worse? Just so he won't get playing time?

True, I'm not looking at any numbers but any option is better than Sucre right now. He's not a backup MLB catcher let alone a backup for a young catcher and for the most part a young staff.

O'Neill has shown a ton of power! He kind of fits the Jack Z mold, high power high K rates. He is still very young and has a lot of potential.
