Lions sign SAF Marcus Gilchrist to open roster spot

A 98 game starter, Gilchrist has played all over the secondary, including getting starts at free safety, strong safety and corner. He has started games for the Los Angeles Chargers, New York Jets, Houston Texans and most recently with the Oakland Raiders.

Gilchrist started every game at free safety for the Raiders last season, recording 58 tackles, three interceptions, and six pass deflections. Known for his positional versatility and intelligence, Gilchrist has the skill set the Lions will covet in the secondary.

At 30 years old (31 in December) Gilchrist is more of a depth player than a starter at this point in his career, but the Lions won’t need him to be one of their three potential starters. In fact, he will likely spend his time challenging undrafted rookie C.J. Moore for a role as the Lions fourth safety and insurance against injury.

In all fairness, Gilchrist may well just be a depth signing. They're down a body with Diggs gone.

About as good as you will find not playing for someone already. A healthy Gilchrist is no worse then an injured Diggs. He actually had better numbers albeit he is declining now. I do think Diggs will reemerge next year when he is healthy but he is toast most likely the rest of this year.

I get it that he becomes another veteran presence along with T. Wilson. That Safety group is young with Walker, Harris and CJ Moore. There's no telling what he brings to the table at this point in his career from an on the field perspective. The numbers Gilchrist has accumulated to date is pretty much moot to me right now.

I do think that Diggs having leg injury issues is a vital impact to his on the field play and especially when you consider his position. I also agree that once he gets healthy you'd expect him to return to form. I'm all for hoping he gets an opportunity to being on a championship caliber team because that's not going to happen in Detroit anytime soon, imo.

Marcus Gilchrist
he was kicking it on the streets up until now
Both the Seahawks and Packers have signed people off the streets (to fill in for injured players) and made the playoffs. It's looks pretty grim for the Lions due to a steep mountain to climb.
