Necessary to rebuild. Also inevitable when allowing Stafford to escape. An awesome draft and 1 or 2 of the flyers we took work out and the team is on its way to recovery.ouch.
Miami made a jump in 2020 after dumping huge amounts in dead cap in 2019
Bills made a jump in 2019
New Orleans rebounded in 2017 but that was one helluva draft too

It should happen
at some point between now and next new league year. Ragnow's 5th year option close to 13M for 2022.
Corey Linsley just got paid by the LAC - 5 year, 62.5M with 26M in guaranteed $$$
Detroit Lions Frank Ragnow Fifth Year Option NFL Contract - Sports Illustrated Detroit Lions News, Analysis and More
In 2019, Ragnow allowed just two sacks on 996 offensive snaps, and earned a 74.9 grade from Pro Football Focus -- ranking sixth among 38 qualified centers.
Last season, Ragnow did not allow a sack in 929 snaps, and only had three penalties called against him all season. He earned a PFF grade of 80.3.
Knowing the type of players head coach Dan Campbell will covet throughout Detroit's rebuild, should the Lions make the 24-year-old the highest-paid center in the league, if and when he is offered a long-term contract extension?
yeah, I get that and this regime "appears to be different" than the previous. You can't rebuild if you let young stars at critical positions walk
I am ok with the dead cap in this case. They are already in a complete rebuild, franchise QB wants out, new GM, new coach. The team needs a fresh restart. Cutting as many of BQ's mistakes as you can out the gate and taking the penalty now to me is a good thing.^^^^
which leads me to the following...... spilled milk and sour grapes
Detroit Lions High Dead Cap 2021 NFL Season Salary Cap - Sports Illustrated Detroit Lions News, Analysis and More
A recent tweet from football analyst Warren Sharp showed that having high dead-cap numbers has an inverse correlation to wins.
Including the 2021 Lions, there have been 13 teams since 2013 with a dead-cap total above $40 million. Just one of the teams -- New Orleans in 2016 -- has amassed at least seven wins in the corresponding season.
One team -- Buffalo in 2018 -- won six games. Four teams won five games, while two won four.
Cleveland, which surpassed the $40 million mark in dead cap in 2017, joined the Lions in infamy when it became the second team to post a winless season that ensuing fall.
Having a high dead cap hasn’t been a sign of good fortune.
The odds are already stacked against the Lions in 2021, with the organization breaking in a new coach, general manager and likely a new quarterback.
With the cap situation set against them, too, the Lions are set to have an uphill battle this upcoming season.
It is why I was so opposed to restructuring Goff. I was hoping they let him play, and if he rebounds, extend him, if not cut him at 0 cost to the Lions.
you ain't a lyin'
Players like him and others who have that propensity for missed tackles in CFB rarely become significantly better at the NFL level. They may shine for a year here and there but that trait rarely disappears completely or to a diminished level for very long.
J. Davis, Tavai and W. Harris all had that trait coming into the league.
Davis could have retired with that in his contract. They gave Oruwariye 10 dollars for each missed tackle.
He is a top 5 center maybe even top 3 so it will be close to top money. It should happen
