ouch.
Miami made a jump in 2020 after dumping huge amounts in dead cap in 2019
Bills made a jump in 2019
New Orleans rebounded in 2017 but that was one helluva draft too

Necessary to rebuild. Also inevitable when allowing Stafford to escape. An awesome draft and 1 or 2 of the flyers we took work out and the team is on its way to recovery.

poor and crappy UFA signings by previous regime's and then change of coaches/schemes

It should happen

at some point between now and next new league year. Ragnow's 5th year option close to 13M for 2022.

Corey Linsley just got paid by the LAC - 5 year, 62.5M with 26M in guaranteed $$$

Detroit Lions Frank Ragnow Fifth Year Option NFL Contract - Sports Illustrated Detroit Lions News, Analysis and More

In 2019, Ragnow allowed just two sacks on 996 offensive snaps, and earned a 74.9 grade from Pro Football Focus -- ranking sixth among 38 qualified centers.

Last season, Ragnow did not allow a sack in 929 snaps, and only had three penalties called against him all season. He earned a PFF grade of 80.3.

Knowing the type of players head coach Dan Campbell will covet throughout Detroit's rebuild, should the Lions make the 24-year-old the highest-paid center in the league, if and when he is offered a long-term contract extension?

You can't rebuild if you let young stars at critical positions walk

yeah, I get that and this regime "appears to be different" than the previous.

however
idiot BQ let Glasgow walk and then pissed away money on a swing OT/OG that got overpaid, not to mention that he had to go right back to the draft well and draft another OG - didn't have a problem drafting Jonah Jackson but repeatedly spending needlessly in FA

Detroit Lions High Dead Cap 2021 NFL Season Salary Cap - Sports Illustrated Detroit Lions News, Analysis and More

A recent tweet from football analyst Warren Sharp showed that having high dead-cap numbers has an inverse correlation to wins.
Including the 2021 Lions, there have been 13 teams since 2013 with a dead-cap total above $40 million. Just one of the teams -- New Orleans in 2016 -- has amassed at least seven wins in the corresponding season.

One team -- Buffalo in 2018 -- won six games. Four teams won five games, while two won four.

Cleveland, which surpassed the $40 million mark in dead cap in 2017, joined the Lions in infamy when it became the second team to post a winless season that ensuing fall.

Having a high dead cap hasn’t been a sign of good fortune.

The odds are already stacked against the Lions in 2021, with the organization breaking in a new coach, general manager and likely a new quarterback.

With the cap situation set against them, too, the Lions are set to have an uphill battle this upcoming season.

So happy to see BQ/MP gone but there's an immense amount of rebuilding to do and it'll take 2-3 drafts and Free Agency to attempt to get to being competitive

I am ok with the dead cap in this case. They are already in a complete rebuild, franchise QB wants out, new GM, new coach. The team needs a fresh restart. Cutting as many of BQ's mistakes as you can out the gate and taking the penalty now to me is a good thing.

It is why I was so opposed to restructuring Goff. I was hoping they let him play, and if he rebounds, extend him, if not cut him at 0 cost to the Lions.

There is no quick turnaround for the Lions, I say 3 years before they are even close to competing. That is if they keep doing it smart as they have been so far. Keep going cheap with prove-it deals, and stay out of the top tier FA. Nail the Drafts.

As much as I'm a non-fan of Goff, I'm all for trying to solidify his side of the ball this year to give him all of the tools to succeed for the next 2 years.

I wasn't happy with him receiving the re-structure but, I do understand that why that task was completed.

you ain't a lyin'

Players like him and others who have that propensity for missed tackles in CFB rarely become significantly better at the NFL level. They may shine for a year here and there but that trait rarely disappears completely or to a diminished level for very long.

J. Davis, Tavai and W. Harris all had that trait coming into the league.

They gave Oruwariye 10 dollars for each missed tackle.
Davis could have retired with that in his contract.

He is a top 5 center maybe even top 3 so it will be close to top money.

Updating the Lions salary cap after the recent moves (usatoday.com)

A quick look at three different sources shows the Lions have around $22 million in cap room remaining for 2021. The discrepancies between the three sources–the NFLPA, Spotrac and Over The Cap–come from the reported deals and the way bonuses, timing and total salary are calculated.

Over the Cap pegs the Lions with $22,229,715 as of April 13th. Spotrac has Detroit with a little more room at $22,508,116. The NFLPA’s public report on the 13th lists Detroit with $21,124,337.

The figure ranks sixth among the NFL’s 32 teams in available cap room, no matter the source. Detroit could spend some on free agents, likely after the 2021 NFL draft, or roll over the excess amount to 2022 and target free agents and potential contract extensions at that point.

Lions should have interest DT Maurice Hurst after release by Raiders (usatoday.com)

In a surprising move, the Las Vegas Raiders released former starting defensive tackle Maurice Hurst this week. Hurst’s unexpected availability should definitely be something the Detroit Lions are interested in, too.

Hurst was the Raiders’ fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Michigan. He was widely considered a top-50 prospect but fell due to concerns over a heart condition. And since joining the Raiders, Hurst played like a top-50 prospect from that draft.

He led all Raiders defensive players in PFF grading in 2020, earning a 77.9 overall score in 11 games. Hurst was also their top-graded defender in 2019 amongst those with at least 100 snaps.

Take it from someone who covers Hurst and the Raiders on a daily basis, Raiders Wire editor Marcus Mosher,
