Detroit Lions signing DT Danny Shelton to 2-year deal

Though his first year in New England was modest, with just one start and 21 tackles in 13 game appearances, he really came into his own in 2019. Shelton started 14 of 16 games, racked up 61 tackles, 3.0 sacks and a respectable PFF grade of 71.6 (35th of 121 qualifying interior defenders).

At 26 years old, Shelton is a nice, younger option for the Lions at nose tackle, and he’s an obvious scheme fit with his success in New England. At just $4 million per year average, he’s also considerably cheaper than if the Lions had gone for a top-tier free agent nose tackle like D.J. Reader, who signed with the Bengals for an average of $13.25 million per year.

Strong signing.

60. DI Danny Shelton
Up until the 2019 season, the 345-pound nose tackle Danny Shelton had been a strong run-defender, but a rather poor pass-rusher. When playing 0/1-tech, Shelton had two seasons in which he had a PFF run-defense grade above 80.0 but also had two seasons in which he graded below 60.0 as a pass-rusher. In 2019, it was a different story. Shelton’s run-defense grade at nose was the third-worst in the NFL and his pass-rush grade was fourth. If he can continue to develop his pass-rushing, Shelton can generate some value at a typically invaluable position. The bottom line though is too not overpay for him.

41. S Tavon Wilson
Box safeties aren’t one of the more valuable positions on the field, but Tavon Wilson was pretty good in that role in 2019 as he ranked 25th in PFF grade at that alignment. He played well over half of his snaps at that alignment, but he was actually better when playing deep safety. Not only was his overall grade higher there, but he also was 17th in coverage grade. Going back to the entirety of his time with Detroit, Wilson has always been better when playing deep. Placing Wilson in a two-high scheme and signing him for cheap is not a bad idea.

38. DI Andrew Billings
Andrew Billings has played the sixth-most snaps at nose tackle the last couple of seasons and sat right around the 50th percentile in two-year grade. When at 3-tech, his pass-rushing was below-average, but at nose Billings owned one of the 10 highest grades and win rates. In fact, his win rate at nose tackle was actually two percentage points higher than his win rate at 3-tech, which is fairly uncommon to see.

12. DI Michael Pierce
Despite a down year by his lofty standards, Pierce has been one of the best run stoppers in the NFL since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He peaked in 2018 with a 92.0 grade against the run, and that was also his best year as a pass-rusher, as he notched 21 pressures on 247 rushes. Pierce is a role player, but he’s proven to be capable of putting together a valuable 400-500 snaps as an early-down run stopper.

The question is — are there anymore Pats on the market? If so, they are most likely to be signed by Detroit:lol:

26. DI Ndamukong Suh
Ndamukong Suh's single season with the Buccaneers didn’t quite go as planned. He finished the year at a career-low 60.3 pass-rush grade and his lowest overall grade since 2012. That said, we mustn’t forget that Suh was one of the most dominant interior defensive linemen in the NFL from 2012 to 2018. He was the third-most valuable player at his position in that stretch and was a strong as both a run-defender and pass-rusher. Suh is 33 years old but worth signing for a season to see if you can resurrect his dominant play.

Report: Detroit Lions trading for Patriots safety Duron Harmon

The Detroit Lions continue to add to their defense, and they continue to draw from the New England Patriots’ well. This time, however, they got a little creative. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Lions have traded for veteran safety Duron Harmon.

Though the direct compensation is still unclear, Rapoport calls it “a flip of late-round picks.

The Lions will assume the final year of Harmon’s four-year $17 million contract, which includes a $3.5 million base salary for 2020 and a roster bonus of $750,000.

at least Harmon won't have to resort to flying to Costa Rica to try to smuggle in some weed.

He can go to directly to Rob Sims and Calvin's weed shops.

Looks like Flowers was just as unsuccessful at at win rate, but face more than average double teams.

Flowers should be released.

immediately.

We are the JV squad of the New England organization. I’m sure it won’t be the last Patriot we sign or trade for this year:L

Ridiculous all the same. The more I think about it, the more it bothers me. Yes, Collins is better than Kennard, let's get that out of the way. But how much better? They gave Kennard 3 yrs/$17 mil two years ago, and gave Collins 3 yrs/ $30 mil today. Kennard isn't earth-shattering, but, as was said above, he had 7 sacks in each of his first two seasons here. This past season he also had 15 hurries, 45 tackles, and a couple forced fumbles. He's definitely earned his salary. He was also elected team captain. Is it really necessary to get rid of him? We can't pay him the little $5 & change in the last year of his deal? Is it a sin to have legit depth at even one position on this team? And Collins has the versatility to move around. Kennard is still the 2nd best linebacker on the team. And, let's also remember, Collins is 30 and has injury history. But nah, we'll just dump Kennard.

WTF?

Same here. I would have kept him as well and cut Longa and some others. We dont have enough quality LBs.
