I was a bit too optimistic about our Dline. Don't waste money or high draft picks on Linebackers unless you've got the defensive line to protect them they'll just end up looking bad regardless of talent/skill.

It wasn't bad to think our D-line would be good.
Snacks was awesome the half season he played the year before.
Flowers was a big FA signing.
Robinson was supposed to provide solid depth, along with Daniels.
On paper the unit looked solid.

Not liking the DL signing.

He can't be worse than the Daniels signing

Vatai is just maturing and could be a very nice pickup.

What is the difference between this guy or Glasgow, just that this guy can play tackle? They are both being paid the same amount. I am assuming he will play RT since that is how much we have been paying Wagner the last few years?

Collins still has some gas in the tank. Had 7 sacks last year. We are desperate at LB and he will be better than C Jones.

They released Kennard after signing Collins. Isn't that who he is replacing or am I assuming this wrong?
Kennard had 7 sacks last season and was one of the few bright spots on that horrific defense last year.
I am also assuming this deal take us out of the running for Isiah Simmons.

I dont think 5 mil is a ton at this point. The cap has gone up 30% in like 4 years. 4 years ago this guys gets 3.5 a year. I just think he is a risk at 30. It is 1 think to sign a former star at 30, but it is a totally different thing to sign a journeyman at that age who finally had a good year.

Hopefully he is like that one guy we had on our team a few years ago that was a journeyman but had a bunch of sacks toward the end of his career.
Totally forgot his name.

Vaitai will most likely be a Tackle for us. he was a luxury for Philly because of Lane Johnson so they moved him to guard.

I did not know we released Kennard. I am surprised to hear that. Does not mean we wont pick him up again if we dont draft Simmons. Simmons is a tweener so there is no transaction we could make in FA that would take him out of the running of being drafted.

Ridiculous all the same. The more I think about it, the more it bothers me. Yes, Collins is better than Kennard, let's get that out of the way. But how much better? They gave Kennard 3 yrs/$17 mil two years ago, and gave Collins 3 yrs/ $30 mil today. Kennard isn't earth-shattering, but, as was said above, he had 7 sacks in each of his first two seasons here. This past season he also had 15 hurries, 45 tackles, and a couple forced fumbles. He's definitely earned his salary. He was also elected team captain. Is it really necessary to get rid of him? We can't pay him the little $5 & change in the last year of his deal? Is it a sin to have legit depth at even one position on this team? And Collins has the versatility to move around. Kennard is still the 2nd best linebacker on the team. And, let's also remember, Collins is 30 and has injury history. But nah, we'll just dump Kennard.

WTF?

I agree that cutting Kennard at this juncture appears to be premature on the forefront.

Maybe Collins' contract details will help to alleviate some of that angst.

this is a two-year deal for Collins, with a potential pricy third year. Here’s the breakdown:

2020: $6.33 million cap hit — $18 million dead cap
2021: $11.33 million cap hit — $11.66 million dead cap
2022: $12.33 million cap hit — $2.33 million dead cap

Breaking down new Lions contracts: Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Jamie Collins, Chase Daniel

While the original five-year deal suggests this is a long-term investment and a fairly big risk on a player that has never been a full-time starter, the details paint a very, very different picture. Spotrac puts it all into perspective here, but here’s the easily digestible part for you.

Cap hit by year + dead money if released

2020: $5.4 million — $20 million in dead cap
2021: $10.4 million — $14.6 million in dead cap
2022: $8.4 million — $4.2 million in dead cap
2023: $10.4 million — $2.8 million in dead cap
2024: $10.4 million — $1.4 million in dead cap

Pretty much all three of those signings are relatively easy outs after two years (2021) season.

And, let's also remember, Collins is 30 and has injury history.

One year, 2017, he played and started 6 games. outside of that and 12 games started in 2015 was the least (not taking into account his rookie year).

This year he feels like a lame duck with a 99% chance of getting fired.

I don't see this regime getting fired until sometime in or after the 2021 season even if they have another poor showing this year.

All the win now mode is coming from the media.

My apologies sir.
These are all wonderful signings.

you completely bypassed my sarcasm.

wait until after the draft is completed.

Your doom and gloom will be more warranted.

But in all seriousness.
Why not just keep Graham Glasgow if we were going to give this other guy about the same amount?

He's not a backup OT ?

and BQ runs the show.

I was a bit too optimistic about our Dline.

On paper prior to the pre-season the defense appeared to be a strength and then all the injuries came.

and lack of quality depth.

it'll continue, imo.

ESPN ranked least favorite moves so far. Vaitai and Collins contracts both ranked worse than the Hopkins trade....

Vaitai isn't going to be an OG. Brandon Brooks is Eagles RG and a pro-bowl one at that.

Vaitai replaced LT Jason Peters every time he was injured.

Johnson was always their RT.

Philly drafted former Washington State LT Andre Dillard at #22 overall last year. That's how much Philly thought of Vaitai.
